Continuing the discussion from No Ranald's gift:
I have a theory about this, but I still need to test it : I believe that if you finish a mission with enough loot dice or coins collected to fill the loot bar and Ranald’s gift gives you nothing, the next mission you complete will have a greyed out Ranald’s gift icon at the rewards tier screen and will skip the step.
