during missions, this audio bug will occur 100% of the time once combat starts and eventually stops once combat does. it goes away if you bring up the in-game menu but starts up again when you exit. it will last as long as combat is going, which means you basically can’t hear anything else.
there’s also NO framerate stuttering while this is occurring - it’s just audio. i do use mods but i did a clean install of the game as well as disabled them just to see if it was that, but the problem persisted and still does.
i also tried editing the user_settings file with a previous solution:
“direct_storage = {
enabled = true
disable_bypass_io = true
force_file_buffering = true
force_mapping_layer = false
}”
but that didn’t work either. i tried disabling windows audio settings like spatial sound as well as designated the actual sound device i was using in the in-game menu with no change.
Jumping off Julia’s suggestion cause Windows experience with bluetooth is weird:
That setting may end up turning itself back on.
You can also try changing the in game mic settings to push to talk or off and/or setting a different mic to be the default device in Windows audio settings Before starting the game.
Darktide and any other game with voice chat based on detecting your voice requires the mic to be always “on” and listening for input above a certain noise level which has a side effect of automatically cutting sound output.
This is one of those weird bluetooth bandwidth issues that Windows tries to handle for you but it kinda falls apart with games. You can’t really have both incoming audio and outgoing mic input without demolishing the quality.
Also as general audio issue prevention, I recommend turning exclusive mode off for everything - both playback and recording. You also have to do it per device. Unfortunately that’s hidden in the old sound menu.
Not Darktide specific but it’s all fun and games until you can’t hear discord chat because your web browser or a game took exclusive control of your headphones. You also have to close and reopen any app that could use the device for the change to work properly but imo just restarting your PC is easier.
i’m just using regular speakers, and while i do have bluetooth headphones, they’re not used when i’m playing this and are disconnected - also, my mic settings are all disabled or muted on the os(windows settings) level - so no mic enabled at all.
i do have other bluetooth devices connected, like my kb&m, but again, none are active headsets and i had them all previously when playing this without any issues.
i’m not entirely sure what triggers it, but i tried playing a game just now and it was going well for maybe a minute into combat until i used the arbites’s blitz “remote detonation”. it’s still the same overloaded sound as before but that’s what happened to trigger it this time.
i tried adjusting the windows settings for the mic and other various things the day i found out and was initially trouble-shooting, but nothing worked. i also never use a mic and have all mic access completely disabled on windows as far as i know.
