Map names are kinda terrible

I honestly think the inital idea was to not have static maps at all, rather you would choose an objective and the map would be procedurally created from a selection of tiles.

Well, that would have been in line with the rotating mission map, which is remiscent of Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers 2. Both which have procedurally generated maps.

Maybe they intended it once, but abandoned it. Who knows.

I remember a lot of people speculating that but it was never the impression I had from that Dev Blog or the few illustrations in it.

In any case, a true procedural generation like DRG wouldn’t really be possible as the system can’t just build a hive city with all the walkways and ducts and everything else all in a sensible fashion (not yet, maybe when we all have personal quantum computers) so it would necessitate a tile system, as you say, and to me, those have always been even more “same-y” and repetitive than what we have now. Everything just tends to lack any character, and it just becomes “oh, this tile” which isn’t too far off from the familiarity we get with our full-length maps, I guess, but it’s in much more frequent chunks. IDK, to each their own.

indeed, it took me forever to learn the maps (layout and names) and tell them apart, because they reuse certain parts and the names are let’s say less inspired.

Exactly. No matter how logical your input, there will always be the usual clowns to refute and defend the current state of the game.

I’m also 1000 hours in and only know about 4 maps by name, the rest I have to look at the thumbnail in the mission select screen.

At first, I didn’t think Darktide map names were that bad and I just couldn’t remember them because I just look at the picture, but even going by the picture I don’t remember a lot of these missions. Like chasm logistratum, I couldn’t tell you what that is, even from the picture, and I definitely beat it a bunch of times lately. I have over 1400 hours in Darktide as well.

I have like 170 hours in Vermintide and also haven’t played it in months. Yet from every mission name, or a picture of it, I can visualize the mission and remember what it’s about, what the end event is, etc. Part of that is the fact that missions take place in the same zones in Darktide, but the names are definitely terrible as well.

I must say this has improved with havoc, because I’m more aware what maps I’m opting in for.
