Ladders - the hidden difficulty modifier

I’m sure this has been brought up before…but could we pretty please have ladders being interactable ONLY on a “Interact” key press? This is such a common complaint across multiple games I have played: “IF I want to interact with a ladder, THEN I will tell you.”

I don’t know, maybe I’m a bit naïve, but that sounds like a pretty good game design practice to leave character control fully in the player’s hands?

I’ve got a reskinned blight storm to sell you.

That would be a “No”, unless it’s invisible and has broken audio cues.

This would be such a great change. I always get frustrated with ladders in this game.

I’d also like the option to interact again while holding a ladder to jump off. While it’s technically possible to jump off a ladder right now, it’s inconsistent and feels like it takes longer than it should.

Source engine handles ladders perfectly

They don’t “suck” you in, you can climb even on the border of it as well as easily disengage it if needed

I also love that ladders throw characters away with great force when you try jump from them, and usually there’s always bottomless abyss in place where we got thrown

You don’t need to press use to get on a ladder in Half Life? where did you get that

lol, haven’t played it in a looong time. but seriously i don’t remember ladders being so annoying back then, or another game where ladders were such an enemy, glueing you onto them as soon as you got near. it can’t be that hard having the player actively decide whether to grab them or not.

Be that as it may, climbing a ladder is something you never want to do by accident in an action game. Having a deliberate keypress to interact with the ladder seems like the logical choice. Having the game can infer whether they wanted to climb the ladder just to save players 1 occasional keypress seems like a bad trade, especially given how many APM are happening for endgame players.

the way Source does is simply by needing you to physically touch it

In Darktide, it just sucks you in, that’s what sucks

they weren’t, because they don’t suck you in, and combined with airstrafing (jumping outside and then touching a ladder to climb on it and deny fall damage), ladders felt a lot more like a tool rather than a liability

you really can use E to interact with ladders in HL

ah, exactly. iirc one could drop onto a ladder and seamlessly continue moving on it. that “getting sucked” onto it makes ladders feel so bad in darktide. they’re like those paper strips with glue on them used to catch flies.

if so what an useless feature pff

Please, yes! For the sake of my beloved deceased grandma! Yes, pls FS, do that! It is so frustrating getting hit, sometimes even going down completely, because you accidentally start to climb a ladder up/down instead of fighting back/ defending yourself.

I had cases where I was pushed into the ladder by certain enemies. Also cases where a ladder prevented me from jumping off, and when I actually jumped off and was MID air off the platform I was still hit by a Crusher’s overhead

There are other issues I take with movement in DT, the other never addressed problems are Ogryn ability to vault, and getting stuck when dodging / moving on maps which put “visuals” and “atmosphere” before gameplay and player experience.
