INVESTIGATION: Poor Performance & Power Draw Issues Impacting AMD Radeon 6000 - 9000 Series GPUs

I started writing about what I think the real cause of all the performance problems are here but it ended up so long I made it its own post. It affects everyone but AMD users especially

Hi @FatsharkJulia,

I have been doing more testing trying to get the game to work better by altering the config files as well as other means.

Something that has always helped, but not solved performance issues for AMD is disabling Resizable Bar / AMD SAM.

This reduces the average FPS, but helps reduce the severity of the fps stutters and dips somewhat.

Not sure if this is information that AMD is aware of, but may be worth passing on.

@FatsharkJulia

I am experiencing bad performance on AMD for a very long time, never ran quite well. Switched from 7900 XTX to an 9070 XT, same issues, bad performance and severe micro-stuttering. SMT on or off makes no difference.

Some things in noticed:

- The games runs MUCH MUCH better on Linux than Windows, tested with bazzite. Maybe you should look into why this is the case… but still performs bad given the PC specs (5800x3D, 32GB 3600 RAM, B550m chipset, RX 9070 XT, no OC, Driver 25.8.1 with DDU clean install)

  • The clockspeed and board power fluctuates wildly on my 9070 XT und Windows. Especially on FSR Quality and below, the boardpower drops to 100 Watts every few seconds, the clockspeed is following. Not so bad on Native FSR. Raytracing is diabled btw, and i tried many settings, to no avail.

Please Fatshark and AMD, do something about this situation. Darktide is the only game that runs notoriously bad. Helldivers 2, using the same engine, runs like supersmooth …

If you can be bothered to change some config files, I have put together a config edit to fix stutters on AMD GPUs.

This should also benefit NVIDIA users, but they aren’t in need like we are.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hi!

I already summarized my experiences in this post on reddit:

My setup: 5800X, 32GB of 3600Mhz memory, Sapphire Nitro+ 7900XTX, the game is on a 2TB NVME SSD.

The only thing I tried since then is the config mods suggested by Vizra. This is the result that Im left with. Ofc this does nothing to solve the cosmetics “thumbnail” generation lag.

Lets just say Im anxious to finally get some fix for these problems, but given how long the game is out now, realistically Im not expecting them to arrive.

Edit: SMT on, reBAR on, display drivers DDUd in safe mode multiple times.

Hey, Seleya.

Before giving up hope, open up Radeon’s Adrenaline Software. Head over to the performance tab, and then find the tuning sub-menu. From there, enable “Manual Tuning.” After you’ve enabled Manual Tuning, flip the switch to enable “GPU Tuning.” Following enabling GPU Tuning, flip the switch to enable “Advanced Control.” From there, set the Maximum Frequency to something like 2500 MHz and the Minimum Frequency to your Maximum Frequency - 100. Of course, tailor the Maximum Frequency to your GPU and not to some arbitrary value supplied by an internet stranger.

My build is very similar to yours: I have a Ryzen 7 5800XT, 32GB of DDR4 at 3400MHz, and a Radeon 6950xt. For myself, this singular change damn near eliminated the godawful frame time peaks and troughs.

I hope it helps

This trick does not work with RDNA 3. It only works for RDNA1 and 2. I’ve tried this already unfortunately.

When i enable FSR3, my gpu will run in 100+w power. When i disable it my gpu run in 220w power. Its fsr problem. Watch this video i upload:战锤40K暗潮 amd 9070GRE FSR卡顿掉帧bug_战锤_游戏实况

Dear FatsharkJulia!

Did something happen ? I just launched my game to check on the state of things, and in my short 2 min test I didnt encounter any stuttering. Even the cosmetics menu generates thumbnails like its nothing. I looked at the fixes and the known issues section of the patch notes, but no mention of any of this. Is it fixed ??

logged in yesterday, after the patch to see if anything has changed and nothing changed.

sure i could reinstall that freaking old driver but is this all just a joke to fatshark???

how can it be, that i can play space marine 2 on very high settings, like smooth as hell but if i try to play darktide with tha latest amd driver and even with very low settings it is totally unplayable.

do you try to sell the fix in the ingame shop in the near future or do you just dont care?

I’ve actually had zero stutters since the update. Yea there’s frame dips sometimes when its very busy and the odd shader compilation hitch but it doesnt feel like the 70fps the steam overlay reports is actually 30fps. MUCH better frame pacing.

RX6600 XT GPU with a Ryzen 5 4600g PRO CPU, genuinely no idea why the game runs this awful.

  • SMT is enabled and I do not know if it’s better/worse with it off.
  • AMD Driver 25.9.1.
  • Issues are mainly in Darktide while other friends (who are notably using Nvidia GPUs) are saying it runs fine.

Have you confirmed that all redundant GPU drivers have been uninstalled? This is especially important if the current GPU is an upgrade and another GPU was previously installed in the same PC

I actually have not tried this? I do doubt how much this will affect performance since it’s just useless space being taken up on a SSD/HDD.

Are you 100% sure that the game is using the RX6600 XT and not the AMD Ryzen 5 4600G with Radeon Graphics?

Is there a way to check that information? It feels as though it should be running off of my dedicated GPU since no other game has the issue.

Edit: checked the launcher log and it shows AdapterId as my RX6600 XT, so yes it’s using the correct GPU.

I switched from an RTX 2080 to a 9070 XT and the performance improvement was a far cry from the 3x to 5x improvements I experienced in other games. It runs more or less the same, with only some improvement (180fps to 210fps) in the Mourningstar, on the same settings. In missions, the difference is negligible.

I did notice something curious regarding ray tracing, however. Setting RTX Global Illumination to “High” actually increased my FPS in-mission. In the Mourningstar, this setting drops my FPS down to 90, but in a mission, it makes my performance remain much more stable, even during hectic scenes with lots of dynamic lighting effects going off.
It does, however, lead to the game eventually crashing.

  • Do you have SMT (Simultaneous Multithreading) enabled?
    • A: not sure, will check soon
  • Which driver version are you using?
    • A: 25.10.2, just barely updated to 25.11.1
  • Do these issues occur only in Darktide?
    • A: That I’m aware of yes. I’m sure it’s happening in other games but I’m not aware of it
  • Have you confirmed that all redundant GPU drivers have been uninstalled? This is especially important if the current GPU is an upgrade and another GPU was previously installed in the same PC
    • A: Yes

Specs
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core
AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT
32GB 2133MHz DDR4 RAM
Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB NVMe SSD
My monitor is 1440p but I play 1080p so the game doesn’t kark itself

Here are the settings I play with to get a semi-stable fps
Another setting I changed that I do remember helped a lot was disabling portrait rendering, but I forgot to include that in this video.

Here are the mods I play with
settings_extension, cancel_loading, graphics_options, DarkCache, animation_events, NumericUI, scoreboard, CollectibleFinder, LoadoutNames, MergedTalentStats, smaller_talent_tree, modular_menu_buttons, InventoryStats, Enhanced_descriptions, danger_zone, WarpUnboundTimer

Experience/Thoughts
When doing stuff in the Mourningstar I get about 80fps on average, and when playing Auric it ranges anywhere from 70-30 depending on how dense the mobs are. Which is interesting because I recently started playing Vermintide II (yes I played the tides in the wrong order), and that game runs SO smooth using the same game engine. Yes I understand it’s an older game so it’s inherently not as complex, but I can see so many of the enemy attack animations or hero abilities that have been basically copy-pasted into Darktide. I don’t know how much of Vermintide II assets/components were used in making Darktide, but I’m left to wonder why the hordes in Darktide so much laggier than they are in Vermintide II? I have no idea how backend game design works, but I really hope Darktide gets some optimization love. It needs it VERY badly.

Wish FS could sticky direct to useful existing posts buried away like this. I make notes of them to keep.

  • Texture Quality to Medium fixing LOD issues. Not VRAM issue as reported by high VRAM GPU users.

  • Shader cache clear. DDU now has this option.

  • Guidance on worker threads depending on CPU architecture

  • Which graphical options impact more than others CPU/GPU i.e. Ambient Occlusion and Lighting has most impact. But they make the game look best. Indicate impact of CPU physics options at bottom.

  • Delete FS folder in Appdata, resetting graphic settings in launcher. Backing up user_settings.config

  • Disable steam overlay as advised by FS support website or any other ones for that matter.

  • You can mitigate MSI Afterburner CPU polling impact using batch script to make it start on low CPU priority with windows “start” cmd.

  • Nvidia, AMD or Intel GPU specific features. Too many so a good starting point is turning on/off/adjust trial and error really per individual. I wouldn’t expect FS to provide exact specifics on this one.

  • Maybe a benchmark tool of high intensity fixed spawns and movement to gauge with graphed FPS and frametimes. Even better separate tool before purchase for new players i.e. Black Myth Wukong Benchmark Tool is a separate free download. Games with in built benchmark tend to be more likely used for tech websites/youtubers for benching and promotes game more.

I did a quick mission with CapFrameX. Gives nice graph.

How has this not been addressed yet?

Even Helldivers 2 runs better than this and it’s based on the same engine.

This is just embarrassing.

  1. Yes Enabled
  2. No
  3. Tried 7 different ones from multile months old till most recent one as of date 23.11.2025 (DD/MM/YYYY)
  4. Yes , i upgraded from a 5700X to a 7800X3D and basicly gained in most games 30-90% fps in some games like World of warcraft / Rimworld even up to 200% MORE fps yes seriously ( Went from 38 to 110+ in wow raids as example )
  5. Its a Fresh Windows 11 Install , happened on first driver install ( so entirely fresh no residues ) and did DDU between all drivers.

6800XT

7800X3D

32gb ram 6000mhz

game installed on NVME with 2gb dram ( 1,3gb/s Throughput for up to 4 hours straight )

Win11

Sound Blaster Z with its own Dedicated 4 cores for audio processing.

FPS vary between 38-110 when absolutely nothing is up or visible

1 enemy model visible drops from 110 to 48~ fps

Seems to dip also every few ( maybe 5 seconds ) by a huge margin atleast my frame graph shows this like a Huge dip.

No ray tracing enabled.

Gpu load 45-78%

None of the cpu Threads above 45%~

Helldivers ( same engine i heard ) run as low as 90 fps fully cranked settings when A “Poo” TON of stuff is going off like multiple barrages + giant swarm fire and more.

when is gonna be fixed im getting tired of it that the game run like crap for 2 years now
