INVESTIGATION: Poor Performance & Power Draw Issues Impacting AMD Radeon 6000 - 9000 Series GPUs

I started writing about what I think the real cause of all the performance problems are here but it ended up so long I made it its own post. It affects everyone but AMD users especially

Hi @FatsharkJulia,

I have been doing more testing trying to get the game to work better by altering the config files as well as other means.

Something that has always helped, but not solved performance issues for AMD is disabling Resizable Bar / AMD SAM.

This reduces the average FPS, but helps reduce the severity of the fps stutters and dips somewhat.

Not sure if this is information that AMD is aware of, but may be worth passing on.

I am experiencing bad performance on AMD for a very long time, never ran quite well. Switched from 7900 XTX to an 9070 XT, same issues, bad performance and severe micro-stuttering. SMT on or off makes no difference.

Some things in noticed:

- The games runs MUCH MUCH better on Linux than Windows, tested with bazzite. Maybe you should look into why this is the case… but still performs bad given the PC specs (5800x3D, 32GB 3600 RAM, B550m chipset, RX 9070 XT, no OC, Driver 25.8.1 with DDU clean install)

  • The clockspeed and board power fluctuates wildly on my 9070 XT und Windows. Especially on FSR Quality and below, the boardpower drops to 100 Watts every few seconds, the clockspeed is following. Not so bad on Native FSR. Raytracing is diabled btw, and i tried many settings, to no avail.

Please Fatshark and AMD, do something about this situation. Darktide is the only game that runs notoriously bad. Helldivers 2, using the same engine, runs like supersmooth …

If you can be bothered to change some config files, I have put together a config edit to fix stutters on AMD GPUs.

This should also benefit NVIDIA users, but they aren’t in need like we are.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hi!

I already summarized my experiences in this post on reddit:

My setup: 5800X, 32GB of 3600Mhz memory, Sapphire Nitro+ 7900XTX, the game is on a 2TB NVME SSD.

The only thing I tried since then is the config mods suggested by Vizra. This is the result that Im left with. Ofc this does nothing to solve the cosmetics “thumbnail” generation lag.

Lets just say Im anxious to finally get some fix for these problems, but given how long the game is out now, realistically Im not expecting them to arrive.

Edit: SMT on, reBAR on, display drivers DDUd in safe mode multiple times.

Hey, Seleya.

Before giving up hope, open up Radeon’s Adrenaline Software. Head over to the performance tab, and then find the tuning sub-menu. From there, enable “Manual Tuning.” After you’ve enabled Manual Tuning, flip the switch to enable “GPU Tuning.” Following enabling GPU Tuning, flip the switch to enable “Advanced Control.” From there, set the Maximum Frequency to something like 2500 MHz and the Minimum Frequency to your Maximum Frequency - 100. Of course, tailor the Maximum Frequency to your GPU and not to some arbitrary value supplied by an internet stranger.

My build is very similar to yours: I have a Ryzen 7 5800XT, 32GB of DDR4 at 3400MHz, and a Radeon 6950xt. For myself, this singular change damn near eliminated the godawful frame time peaks and troughs.

I hope it helps :slight_smile:

This trick does not work with RDNA 3. It only works for RDNA1 and 2. I’ve tried this already unfortunately.

When i enable FSR3, my gpu will run in 100+w power.When i disable it my gpu run in 220w power.Its fsr problem. Watch this video i upload:战锤40K暗潮 amd 9070GRE FSR卡顿掉帧bug_战锤_游戏实况

Here is a minor data point that may be relevant.

My PC is a 5800X3d with 9070 GPU. Lately framerates vary between 60-170 but the average reported by Adrenalin is 89-95 FPS per session.

Yesterday I updated the Bios on my B550M motherboard. I left it at defaults, which does not enamble XMP, and Rebar. I loaded in to windows, started a game and got the same low FPS average (not intentional i forgot to update my settings and didn’t realize it).

I then went back to bios, enabled XMP and Rebar and above 4G. Booted into Windows, played a session and averaged 176FPS (I have frames limited to 180, my monitor refresh rate).

I rebooted again with no changes and average FPS went down again to 89-94 FPS. I have not had time since then to experiment more.

I do have some of the setting above changed,

streaming_buffer_size = 128

streaming_max_open_streams = 64

streaming_texture_pool_size = 1024

texture_streamer_settings = { streaming_buffer_size = 128 streaming_texture_pool_size = 2048

Dear FatsharkJulia!

Did something happen ? I just launched my game to check on the state of things, and in my short 2 min test I didnt encounter any stuttering. Even the cosmetics menu generates thumbnails like its nothing. I looked at the fixes and the known issues section of the patch notes, but no mention of any of this. Is it fixed ??

logged in yesterday, after the patch to see if anything has changed and nothing changed.

sure i could reinstall that freaking old driver but is this all just a joke to fatshark???

how can it be, that i can play space marine 2 on very high settings, like smooth as hell but if i try to play darktide with tha latest amd driver and even with very low settings it is totally unplayable.

do you try to sell the fix in the ingame shop in the near future or do you just dont care?

I’ve actually had zero stutters since the update. Yea there’s frame dips sometimes when its very busy and the odd shader compilation hitch but it doesnt feel like the 70fps the steam overlay reports is actually 30fps. MUCH better frame pacing.
