In defence of Fatshark - the realities of games and software development

fully agree on your first paragraph
fully agree on A and B, but slightly disagree making them responsible how you spend your time or they have to respect it.
Respect yourself!
Sure the mechanics used to create player retention are questionable and skinner box psychology. The hope to find something usefull every hour and every new day at Melk is the “trick” to make you come back and release dopamine in your brain, make you happy even when the result is 20 blues Axes with a max base rating of 307, T1-2 perks and rather useless blessing. Not to talk about the hope you have when you accidently find a decent to viable or even good weapon go consecrate it and then get betrayed by the Omnissiah for your hard earned plasteel and diamantine.

But again, you decide what and how often!!! You are the one who can dictate the battlefield, not only can you, you allways have to!!!
OF COURSE are they “greedy and predatory” every business is. Tell me a successfull business that isnt? Even the church is predatory for 2000 years and use psychological tricks, even the hospitals, lots of doctors do it. This is what capitalism is all about and we all profit and suffer from it the same way.
But we all can make decisions, at least about gaming and how we spend our freetime. At least how much we care for all this in DT beside having fun playing missions. And playing missions is no question very fun, else we wouldn’t be here, else we wouldnt even be upset about the rest of it.
And i dont say we shouldn’t be upset, vent, rant, tell them WTF did you do here with that wonderfull game if we talk about stuff beside missions, leveldesign, combat, artwork, music…

I for myslef got over it, i will spend some money on cosmetics i will play further as long as i have fun and i will check the f… shops hourly/ daily when i have time to play and play for the fun it is firstly.
But i got over predatory, greedy, skinner box RNG psycho stuff and controll myself.
The hell i’d do and check the shop hourly with a webbrowser nor on my PC and neither on my mobile. HELL NO!!!

I think it’s more that releasing it unfinished was the least worse option they had. I’m guessing there’s some contract they were beholden to. My guess is NVIDIA and the 4000 launch. Probably some other stuff too.

In my mind, consumers are entitled as much outrage as the price they paid minus the refund they can get. There’s plenty of things to be upset over, but a lot of people who are super upset should have taken a refund, left an honest review, and walked away. Some people are going way past the $40 of outrage…

Steam refuses because of the time i have in the game pre-release because of their pre launch beta.

Heck, if I could get my refund, id leave this forum and never come back.

Ill put it out there, if someone pays me the cost of my game with dlc, ill delete my forum account and never come back here.

Put in a support ticket with FS. 2 months after launch, IDK but I have seen a few get refunds well past the 2 hour mark because the game crashes on their hardware too much to really play.

We need an expert witness to estimate the value of outrage.

ridiculously childish ian’t it?
just move on, all the anger for 40 bucks?
How long have you played including pre order beta?

I’m short at money, buyed myself a new drum i play to relieve anger XD
else i would maybe pay you the game to make you happy again XD

I did. Someone else has pretty much the same scenario as me and they got accepted and I didnt. They even sent me screenshots and all that so I know it was true.

But at this point I mostly post the data that I see, from CMs not coming here but being on reddit / discord to the current decline that I see in the data.

I also been keeping an eye on media and social media.

Im at the point where this is mostly morbid curiosity in my case due to my real life background as a BA.

Oh im happy. Im usually on here while I work on other data in real life.

Did you buy the drums due to Darktide :stuck_out_tongue:

But no, otherwise ill keep reporting the data that I see. I just find it hilarious to be paid to leave. And I would. Heck id delete the game from steam and delete it from my store (there is actually an option for that on steam which i find odd).

no i’m a percussionist and carinval is coming, was more of a joke, but i’m also trying to become a music therapist and drumming is good against anger and a lot more
24" makes booom XD

I feel like they wanted the income for 2022 end of year report. Now, after their “huge” success they have the whole year to make up for it by the end of the year for the next report.

As a consumer I am starting to feel like they falsely advertised the game with a Chaos Spawn reveal trailer.

Games have turned into a turn and burn with cash grab systems. The quality of good games are dying. This once “gem” of a franchise was one of the few I thought could do things the right way, show the industry that you don’t have to resort to petty tactics to be successful.

Of course. The game was delayed from 2021 to 2022 summer to end of 2022. Tencent bought 36% in 2019 and another 15% early 2021. They want to see a return on their money.

Had to make the Q4 numbers look good for the shareholders.

Then theyll spend 6 months fixing the game.

Then they will announce a DLC. I put a bet that itll be a bit before the holidays. Then DT numbers ONCE AGAIN will look good for Q4.

Rinse and repeat.

Nice mate, I play piano and guitar and used to be in an orchestra when i was younger. Music is a good way to let the soul out. I wish you luck!

I am up-in-arms over the fact that they knew the state of the game and its features (and lack-there-of) but decided of their own volition to be deceitful about the games state. Had they been open and honest I wouldn’t mind. they were not and I feel they deceived me with how they advertised and talked about the game selling it as far more complete than it was. After release they continued with deceitful statements and actions right up until now

Sorry you weren’t able to get a refund. Did you try soon after launch, or wait a while?

Recently as the other person also did it recently.

Its ok. I had stopped pre-purchasing games but figured they had learned their lesson with V1 and V2.

Totally my fault for doing that. But since I did, im all in for my outrage. Keeps me busy while stuff load on my work computer. Im also doing playtest in another game at the moment so there is that.

So im keeping an eye on the data that I see publicly. I wish I had done a bit more research earlier. Is it worth the money I have spent on the game? No, but do I enjoy doing the investigation? Hell ya, im fairly neurotic with stuff like that.

The thing is, they have a track record of this and that is indefensable. Everyone that is trying to appease other people, i take it with a grain of salt. If something is crap and stays crap, well, it needs to be called.

Albeit, i do not advocate for violence or anything like that.

I half agree with you. Yes, every individual is ultimately responsible for his action. No, not all business practices are equally acceptable, even if they are effective in maximizing RoI.
Of course, explaining that to investors is a risky waltz. Speaking as someone routinely responsible to find fundings to secure the livelihood of employees, which is at least a subject matter on which I can empathise with other managers/directors, including Fatshark’s.

I dont think I lack self control on my own spending habits, but some aspects really rub me the wrong way.
Btw, when I talk about the game not respecting my time, I am refering to a couple of things : grind/rng necessary to test new builds/weapons, absence of shortcut to go from one shop to the other, loading times, mission selection parameters… overall not enough player agency, and I strongly suspect some of these are designed to have me spend time in the vincinity of the cosmetic store.

I truly hope I will make my own fun in the meantime, believe me, I am the kind of player who would willingly take 3 crushers with a teaspoon if the game would let me. But also at some point, if the grind is more than the pleasure, I might move on to something else. Time will tell.

Steam refund policy is 2 hours playtime to refund how would they reach 30 and have a solid grasp of the end game experience by then? People have a right to be upset that doesn’t make them inherently toxic because they were lied to. Most of this could have been avoided if fatshark had just made this game an early access title.

As a dev, I can understand things not going to plan
As a consummer, I can also understand leaving a bad review

What I cannot understand, is bad communication. Games such as NMS taught us that.

Funny how many other developers can actually deliver good finished product.

I mean I understand things can go south when you develop stuff. I can understand things will go wrong etc.

But… maybe don’t promise things that won’t be added/are not yet implemented and don’t lie about features/quality of product?

That’s a start for customers not feeling scammed.

Okay, then go ahead and observe a little further, because you’re so far off the point it’s incredible.

People are up in arms over the fact that what was advertised was not delivered.

Story, crafting, just to name the most obvious examples. They’re also up in arms over deceitful behaviour, be it the old “no, really, we always wanted to sell 2.4k currency packs”, the “we’re happy with how the game is received”, or the “crafting in December”.

On top of that, there was little to no communication since mid December.

That’s what people are up in arms about
