Idea of new weapons marks for the skitarii plus pet peeves about the boring special attack they currently have

Alright boys, the DLC dropped. The gameplay is solid, and the melee weapons are tasteful (although I’ve seen some complaints about the balancing).

I do have a few pet peeves with the Skitarii ranged weapons, though. To keep it short: there are no variants, the weapon specials are boring, and there are too many small differences from the artwork and tabletop models for my taste.

First, I think everyone can agree that the special attacks for the Skitarii ranged weapons are disappointingly boring. We got three different weapons, and all three just use a weapon bash.

To be fair, a lot of ranged weapons simply have a bash or a flashlight as their special action. Still, I thought Fatshark was moving toward making weapon specials more interesting and unique. For example, the Hive Scum dual autoguns have a fairly boring special, but the dual pistols have a unique animation tied to a specific gameplay mechanic (a massive finesse multiplier that rewards accurate aim). Likewise, the needle pistol lets you switch toxins. While that isn’t the most exciting thing either, changing toxin types has a much bigger impact on gameplay than another generic weapon bash.

My second point:the lack of weapon mark qnd some aesthetic point.
For each weapon , i will go through my aethestic complain then propose one or multiple mark with a suggestion of special to it

Some of you might remember the thread I made before the DLC released. The points I raised there still stand. I understand that the weapons in-game are Moebian-pattern variants, but I’d still like to see weapon marks that are one-to-one recreations of the tabletop models or the official artwork(mars pattern if you like).

Galvanic Rifle

So, the Branx Pattern is basically a Garand in space. The drum magazine/revolver cylinder on the Galvanic Rifle is actually a power coil. Alright, why not? The Galvanic Rifle has always been something of a mix of different historical rifle influences(lee enfield, johnson rifle for exemple even maybe a bit of brown bess), and there was definitely some Garand inspiration in the original design plus I do like the blue light accent on the rifle. The weapon looks almost entirely right

However, I think they leaned too heavily into the Garand. To make it look more like a Garand, they added a lever on the left side of the rifle that wasn’t present on the original design, and they altered the breech, the rear receiver block and the iron sight embelished “stud” so they more closely resemble those of an M1 Garand. I am not a big fan of these changes even though I know it is a popular representation

I don’t even think that what we see on top of the tabletop Galvanic Rifle is meant to represent a breech at all. Here are side views of the galvanic rifle and a model who is closer to the tabletop model.

The drum mag are not shown to glow in the official tabletop look and for most of the artwork. Plus the galvanism can refer to the generation of electric current by chemical action but also the generation of electric current within biological organisms and the contraction/convulsion of biological muscle tissue upon contact with electric current. So while I can see why the most direct interpretation is a gun firing a electrified bullet, I don’t think this was what was depicted before.
From the 7th skitarii codex for the galvanic rifle :" Yet the Galvanic Servitor bullets inside are incredibly advanced. When such a bullet strikes home it causes all the potential energy of the target to burn out in a killing blast of electric force". In the description ,it sound more like the eletric power of the rifle come from the victim itself

So I think the tabletop Galvanic Rifle is in reality a revolver rifle firing galvanic bullets loaded with chemical compounds and techno-babble that, upon contact with the enemy, create a powerful electrical discharge. I don’ think it could be top loaded at all

What I propose for a variant would be the Mark IV Arkhan Pattern, which is the pattern we’re most used to seeing. This pattern would be a drum magazine/cylinder-fed Galvanic Rifle with a larger ammo capacity. Following the classic “more ammo, less damage” pattern we already have in-game, the rifle would hit a little less hard than the one already in the game.

If we keep the blue diode on the drum mag , then you can add the special for the battery variants i spoke of a bit below.
If not, maybe there could be a special making use of the fact the bullet got servitor in them but i do not know how to make use of this without treading the same ground as one of the skitarius ability.
As a massive fan of the Adeptus Mechanicus tabletop models and artwork, this is the variant I’d most like to see added to the game.

Alternatively, if we aim to keep the battery coil on the gun while imitating the look of the tabletop version, I could see a variant based on the one we already have in-game. It would eschew the reloading lever on the left side of the gun and instead be reloaded one round at a time, while dealing more damage. (I don’t mean that the gun would become a breech-loading rifle like the Martini-Henry. Although that would call back to the lore that the Galvanic Rifle is somehow based on ancient Martian flintlock hunting rifles, it would still hold multiple rounds.)

It would look similar to one of the Skitarii concept arts that the Fatshark team shared, although it would still have the breech-looking part that differs from the tabletop and artwork design.

To open the action, you could make use of one of the bolts on the side as a button to unlock the breech, then close it again after loading the rounds.lternatively, if we aim to keep the battery coil on the gun while imitating the look of the tabletop version, I could see a variant based on the one we already have in-game. The battery variants could make use of it in the special to electrify the enemy on impact for exemple

All in all, here is two variants for the galvanic rifle, one drum based which imitate the tabletop look and one based on the concept art fatshark made for darktide. I made my preference clear.
I’m gonna post the arc rifle and phosphor blast pistol in a second post

For these two, my main problems are again the aesthetic changes
For the arc rifle.
The branx pattern is a battle rifle pattern with a removing power battery.

What I don’t like is the simplification of the artstyle (the simplified grip , the sightly less baroque look for the handguard, the stock), the lack of the oversized nozzle lever, and the removal of the stud on top of the receiver, which is now sort of part of the action that the Skitarius needs to operate while reloading. After that, it goes down into the receiver tough it is farther back than in the artwork.

I would like a way to keep the stud visible on the gun most of the time. If we decide that it is part of the reloading mechanism and that it usually stays up because the reload mechanism is disengaged when the rifle is used with a backpack, I would still like a slight alteration to the reload animation for the new variants.

Either the stud stays visible at all times and the reload mechanism for one of the variants becomes a front-to-back movement,

OR, to reuse the in-game animation, the stud would stay up while the gun is loaded, then drop down once the battery is empty. After reloading the battery, the Skitarius would raise it again using the existing animation, but the final part where it is slapped back into the receiver would be omitted.

Finally, since we already have the Voltaic Backpack in-game, when you look at it, it’s simply the addition of a Voltaic Power Unit to a standard Skitarii backpack, and there is no possibility of not wearing a backpack as a Skitarii. In the end, there are fewer technical hurdles to implementing a backpack-fed Skitarii rifle than I originally thought.

In terms of gameplay, there is already a way to imitate the effect of a Skitarii backpack with the ammo regeneration perk and the perk that reloads your weapon when it isn’t in use.

For a variant without a backpack, I could see a Mars Pattern Arc Rifle with heavier damage and a weapon special that charges a lightning bolt in the rifle, similar to the Plasma Gun.

For a variant with a backpack, I could see an ammo regeneration passive combined with a huge ammo reserve, lower damage, and a higher fire rate, while still allowing the battery to be reloaded by disengaging the nozzle with the lever.

As a weapon special, an overdrive mode for the Arc Rifle’s power feed, activated by using the nozzle lever (if it isn’t already used in the reload animation), could temporarily boost the fire rate at the cost of adding an overheat mechanic.

The Phosphor blaster

The same problems with the grips as with the arc rifle (they’re supposed to be similar across most Skitarii weapons), as well as the less baroque look of the front sight and iron sight studs.

The representation we had before Darktide was this one. The whole cylinder acted as both the barrel and the cylinder, a bit like a more advanced pepperbox pistol.

I could see a pattern using this type of reload, where the entire cylinder is replaced. The weapon special could be similar to the Repeater Pistol from Vermintide, where you rotate the cylinder, allowing you to fire multiple rounds at once or in this case sequentially but essentialy at once

Like I said, I know we’re using Branx Pattern Adeptus Mechanicus weapons rather than the versions we’re used to seeing in the tabletop and artwork. This thread is simply meant as a variant/skin suggestion post though the variants I proposed necessitate a bit more work than what we are usually getting for ranged weapons in darktide. I will say though that the stub revolver had a weapon animation change between his first and second mark and it far better than the usual sightly different model, same animation, dps change we usually have

In the end though ,skins that are one to one to the side view artwork provided on top would also be fine to me.
Animation borked by a premium cosmetic are not unknown, as it is for exemple for the vostroyan flamethrower

To conclude:

I am happy with the melee weapons we got, but I would like to see the rest of the Skitarii Vanguard/Ranger arsenal added.

We’re still missing the Transuranic Arquebus, the Arc Pistol, the Taser Goad, the Radium Rifle and Pistol, and the Plasma Caliver.

The Transuranic Arquebus would be the first bolt-action rifle in Darktide, which would be pretty cool. The special could simply deploying the arquebus fork rest for a massive boost in accuracy but no movement

You could handwave the use of radium weapons around Rejects by introducing a pattern that uses faster-decaying or less potent isotopes to help preserve the hive.

I would also be happily surprised if we got some weapons from the Sicarian range in addition to the existing Transonic Blade, such as the Stubcarbine and Flechette Blaster (since Mindscrambler Grenades are probably not possible). It’s a shame, because I don’t find the shield particularly useful or fun, so I would have happily taken two grenade types and servo-skulls as Blitzes instead.
I hope i will have nothing to nitpick about when/if they are added

on the taser goad specifically, it got mentioned repeatedly in marketing material by mistake. i think they may have the weapon planned or are working on it but it didnt make it into skitarii release.
in the game files there’s also a few things like two more marks of phosphor pistol, a transonic sword standalone, transonic knife stand alone, etc. total speculation but the files presence does suggest they might’ve had to cut the skitarii arsenal down because of time constraints

I do remember the taser goad being mentioned but i thought they just confused the name between the arc maul and the taser goad.
Where have you seen those informations ? In the modding discord i would assume?

i saw screenshots, this video is the only thing i can find on it atm. skip to 4m, he’ll start showing em there

Oh! Possibly the arc pistol and the possibility of the combo las pistol plus chaindword ! That is nice though it would seem there is no new mark or pattern in the work for the arc rifle and galvanic rifle.
The video implied the new pattern fot the phosphor pistol woulf be a phosphor serpenta ?Alright why not but they are not really used by skitarii except as a servitor gun on the ironstrider
If we are getting the phosphor serpenta then there is also the macrostubber and gamma pistol that are mean looking admech weapons

BUT i think he is wrong and what we could get are the phosphor pistol of the serberys hound riders

Darktide is really going to become the baseline for the Galvanic Rifle’s mechanism, huh?

I guess from now on we’ll have this interpretation of the Galvanic Rifle in the next Warhammer shooters featuring the Adeptus Mechanicus, and probably in future community mods too but that would imply that the receiver will always have to accomodate the new breech and the lever on the side.Damn.

It feels a bit like nostalgia bait or Americana bait, to me.I’m not a fan
