Whatever they do, I’m hoping for more interesting gameplay, so that the correct way to play it isn’t just spamming the special attack. Probably this will have to include a significantly reduced AoE so you can’t keep entire crowds permastunned.
I mean more accurate would be to say at best it comfortably solos a crusher patrol (with as many bulwarks mixed in as you like). Yes it’s a lame moveset to use for those situations but that doesn’t change the strengths it does have.
No but the fact that its horde clear potential is inferior only to the cleavers and shovel mk5 in the Ogrin arsenal, has the most CC of any weapon and generous AP are enough to make the weapon more than fine. What else do you want it to do? Oneshot everything like the new shovel?
Honestly good question and one I’m still trying to decide for myself.
I dislike the light attack pattern looping attacks 3 & 4, because they are around 100 damage weaker vs all armor classes than I like. I want more base damage on heavy attacks, again, 50 - 100 more.
I dislike the attack speed, the slow down on powering up, the sensation that I need to spam power up attacks to achieve what is a normal DPS with other weapons.
I don’t feel like I need the powered up attacks to 1-shot all elites or really changed the AOE, but I’m also not opposed to it getting an internal cooldown to prevent spam if the club part becomes good enough.
The light 3 and 4 are not useful, this is hardly a problem though, you just not use them, it’s not like it’s the only weapon to have useless moveset.
I dislike the slowdown too, it’s the only thing i would change about the weapon but you don’t need to spam the powered attack to have good dps, with normal heavy attack you kill at least 4/5 poxwalkers per swing not, if it’s groaners probably 7 or 8 it’s harder to count, and I’m not counting the bleed damage . Powered attacks are only necessary to kill elites and even so it’s not needed to use it at any swing, it’s attack speed is just fine, and you can get +10% after 5 swings.
Where is the challenge in the game if you can oneshot anything?
Is above-average-not-best horde clear something that any team really needs? Because switching to “stun group of crushers” mode is nice and all, except for the veteran with krak grenades or the psyker with a trauma staff standing behind you.
Paul kinda reminds me of the shield before buffs and talent revamp. Can you make it work? Yeah, but you’re probably going to accomplish more of whatever you’re trying to do with something else, or one of your teammates will do it better.
I think these tweaks would bring PAUL up to a decent power level.
1. Speed up the heavy attack chain by roughly 25% and slightly increase damage.
2. Increase light attack chain damage, feels too weak currently.
3. Make the special attack do bit of extra damage against carapace and unyielding enemies (basically all ogryns/monsters), they got a bigger surface area and thus should take more damage from the explosion that is the Paul special.
If they did all that Paul would go from a CC only tool to a more versatile jack-of-all-trades master of none type weapon while still retaining/improving its CC capability.
I don’t understand what do you mean by that?
Are you saying that if something is not the peak of horde clear then is not worth taking?
Being able to control a pack of crushers is useless because krak granades and trauma staff exist?
You don’t?
Because it looks to me like equivalent heavy attacks on the regular mauls have about 23% more damage. Assuming those aren’t way overtuned, I’d expect 20% less of average to not qualify as “good” anymore.
I’m saying that there are lots of different ways to clear horde, even more sub-peak methods. Paul’s horde clear (or horde spreading around on the floor as it were) isn’t going to save any mission.
Controlling a pack of crushers is great so long as someone actually kills them. Wouldn’t you like to do that in melee as well as other classes do it at range? Especially if you’re using the best weapon you can for addressing those sorts of enemies?
To me it’d be like a Psyker going in with only Smite and a Catachan. I can kill horde and I can hold other stuff in place while you kill it. It’s not useless, it’s just not as much as it should be. It’s missing something.
That’s fascinating to me, no sarcasm. I think I might see one paul user in a week of missions. I don’t think it’s ever occurred to me that a mission was easier because someone was using paul.
Is it really something you feel is impacting gameplay? If so, on what difficulty levels? Just curious…
Paul is absolutely one of the worst melee weapons in the game. Currently it is completely unaffecting me as someone who plays Damnation and Auric Damnation. However if the weapon gets all of its attacks buffed etc and it’s special remains the same I feel like it could become oppressive and unfun to play with, both as the person using it or the person playing with you.
I would like it to be similar to Indy Crusher where it does more damage but has a much smaller AoE on the stagger explosion.
I feel like at the very least it should have a faster activation time.
I think FS doesn’t understand how power maul type weapons work as well. In game it’s a charged up nerf bat that only slightly does more damage when charged up. Realistically you should be absolutely caving in armor at the very least.
I think an ok spot would be having a marginal AOE effect with more direct damage and stagger. Essentially bring it in line with the Zealot’s maul and maybe change some of the damage stats on it.
Weapon balance is in the dumpster considering the new shovel can just 1 shot crushers on damnation with no real fan fair and a faster activation time but the literal power weapon has the kinetic power of a child with a sock em bopper. It’s not even wanting it to be op, you can reduce damage against unyielding or do something with it but god dam it makes 0 sense.
You are all really underestimating Paul potential, just damage per se is useless, remember, in darktide all that counts is breakpoints. I said it before but i will try to be more clear now: for horde clearing you just need to do 375 headshot damage with your heavy attack and have brutal momentum blessing, this is easily achieved without using the special activation, since the heavy attack is a perfect horizontal line you literally pop heads like balloons, you don’t trow them around.
