A plague hound pounced on me just as I trigged the psyker’s “about to explode” animation before (or at the same time as) I could get venting shriek off, and I popped and was downed instantly.
I’m assuming that if my team had reacted in time I’d have been able to get back up and vent the peril.
Here is a vid of it happening with a mutant: https://youtu.be/qHgUd9XQxFY?si=Xu1v6xTaB5vMdjbY (please ignore the cringe chat, people are were yelling at each other during an end event in a maelstrom ;-; )
To add to the reproduction rate: it seems to be 100% of the time when you are doing the “exploding” animation. My friend really likes to do a full charge of purg staff while at 100% peril and then saving himself with venting shriek afterwards and he instantly explodes literally every single time a dog or mutant touches him in these situations.
It’s likely happened a dozen times or more. I’m super surprised to see that this is (seemingly) the first bug report on it.
If the dog is immediately knocked off of you, you can use venting shriek 2.5 seconds after it initially disables you. It takes a smidge over 3 seconds to explode from peril overload.
After a little bit of testing, I can confirm that this same interaction happens with getting netted along with mutie / chaos spawn grab. These three disables let you take action almost immediately after being relieved of the effects.
I think it’s pretty unintuitive and would rather get the full explosion timer in every scenario
That’s the issue: you already are in the explosion animation, when a disabler gets you it triggers the explosion.
Think of it as the disruption from the grab to be the last straw that makes you lose all restraint and go boom.
Mechanically speaking to me it makes sense that in the time frame where I’m completely exposed the single 1HP hit triggers my death.
The grace period of the animation between overreaching and exploding is for us to press the skill, if we don’t have it ready it is our fault for getting distracted and going over 100% while VS was on cooldown.
VS is a “save your ass” skill because you screwed up, it does not mean that the game should revolve around us not using the skill fast enough in the middle of an attack.
If you want it to be thematic, you should instantly explode when you get knocked back, take a certain amount of damage, or see a particularly rancid ogryn sprinting at you.
It would also be very unintuitive to the average player, just like this specific issue is. You shouldn’t have to do mental gymnastics to figure out why you instantly exploded when you usually don’t.
