Before I write a bug report I wanted to ask here if someone has this too.
When I close the game my CPU (7800x3d) goes to 85°C+ for a very short time.
And no this happens not even at heavy benchmarks or demanding games.
I got a watercooling with a little bit delay at the stepup/down timings for the fan/pumpspeed so it doesnt goes too quick up and down all the time. But this was never an issue until now.
No, they are all properly set up for the temps. And and at 70°C CPU-temp they go 100%.
The problem is that suddenly there is so much load that the CPU heats up quicker than the fans and pump can react because it also stops pretty quick again. It still puts thermal stress on the hardware when it heats up and cools down everytime so fast.
With water cooling you want it to always be at atleast 30% fanspeed ~ for most all in one solutions so there is always water circulation and they live longer when you have set up step up and step down times thats small breaks between the temp steps. It’s only a few millisecs tho.
Others have the same problem in the steam forum how I did read today.
Ok so I tested this and all I can say for sure is it’s not a universal darktide problem, because it doesn’t happen on my 13600kf with a noctua D15 (I know it’s overkill for that cpu, but it was the only cooler they had that wasn’t garbonzo and my AIO just died). Might be an AMD thing, might be a bad fan curve thing, might be something else.
I’m assuming you meant that the pump is meant to always be on, and the 30% is the threshold where your pump and fans turn off, which yes you do not want.
Load up hwinfo and see what happens to your temperature and pump/fan speed during gameplay, and when the game stops. Your pump might also be inaccurately reporting rpm, like mine did when my AIO died.
Speed going down when your temp is higher is a sign that something else may be the cause, or that for some reason the particular load on closing is somehow more strenuous than normal gameplay.
Now test with a stress test like prime95 or intel xtu, and then with a storage benchmark, to see if it’s just a quick cpu load or storage load causing your temps to spike, and the issue is with your system or drivers or something software side, or if it’s darktide itself. If when you load the stress test one of the different tests causes your temp to spike instantly, it’s not darktide, but if you can run different kinds of stress tests and not have it spike, that means it’s definitely darktide. I know it’s a lot to do just for a game test, but it clears up whether the problem is with your cooling, or darktide. This would pretty much confirm that it’s darktide in some capacity, whether that’s on AMD processors or AIO’s etc.
I have seen similiar stuff happen at Spacemarine 2 where they forgot to put a stop in the code after activating some kind of boosting for the shader loading so it was constantly going full power when starting the game until you where in the interface. This is only meant to be milliseconds to help loading then faster tho. The CPU even went over 5GHz even tho I disabled all overclocking stuff.
I had to manually set the CPU to 99% Max performance to stop this until they fixed it.
Yeah I’m just covering bases, because sometimes people say that and mean they ran CoD battle royale and did the fps test, not prime95 and furmark.
This makes me wonder if it’s an AMD specific problem, and if they test on nvidia/intel, because everyone seems to complain about fps on AMD cards, and then this doesn’t happen on my 13600kf. That or a storage thing and maybe your drivers are out of date. It’s looking like it’s just darktide tho.
Not quite the same in Darktide, but within the same zip code. Nothing to be done, wait for the hotfix…and somehow pretend that it wasn’t a hotfix that got us there in the first place
Hi. I registered on the forum just to let you know I’m having the exact same CPU and I also have an AIO cooler (Arctic Liquid Freezer 240). I can clearly hear the cooler speeding up when I exit the game. I am locked to 120 FPS and the CPU temp doesn’t even come close to 60 celsius during gameplay and at no point after even 2 hours of near constant gameplay does it ever start to heat up. My assumption was immediately something having to do with the game and your post solidifies it.
have you tried a single threaded benchmark to see if the same thermal spike occurs?
most modern cpu’s will have a boost/turbo mode for single threaded workloads. you have a temp sensor on each cpu core itself, but whatever you are using for monitoring temps may simply reporting the highest temp any core rather then averaging temps across all cores, pushing a single core to 5 ghz, may spike the perceived temperature more then pushing 8 cores to 4.2 ghz for example.
this is quite normal behavour for a cpu however and your temps are WELL within specifications,
turbo mode allows a single thread of your cpu to spike briefly which helps when you need a short burst of speed to do a task, turbo mode will only activate if your cpu temps and power draw limits are in check.
i have personally never heard of a cooler “lagging”, i could see that as a reasonable assumption however if you are running your pump at a very low speed or even off. then sure, a burst work load like this “might” be able to heat the water so much that before the pump kicks on.
you may want to double check to make sure your pump is always running, if you built the computer yourself (or brought a pre built by who knows where) see is your pump is connected to fan header, your motherboard may be treating it as a fan and turning it off entirely. based on your fan curve settings etc. that wouldn’t be ideal your pump should always be running 24/7
fan speed on this should not matter for this particular scenario as it is not a long workload where your entire loop is reaching equilibrium. that burst workload will only be heating water, and then dissipated rad/ fans later on.
I did a little testing with my 360 Arctic AIO and 9800X3D. As I lowered the pump speed I did see an increase in temps when quitting the game. Not nearly as big as OP though. At 10%, which is a bad idea, I was only seeing a bump from 50C to 60C when quitting the game.
Are you using the single 4-Pin fan plug, or the one that splits it into 3 separate plugs. Also what MB do you have? Some motherboards have a dedicated pump ‘fan’ header that should be used if available. Not all fan headers are the same either. Most non-pump headers are 1 amp at 12 volt. the 420 Arctic can pull 1.45 amps. 0.35 for the pump, 0.35 for each of the fans, and 0.05 for the VRM fan. Pump headers aren’t really standardized but they typically rated at or above 2 amps.
Personally I run the VRM fan at 100%, the pump at 80% and the fans vary by temp between 20% and 100%. My system is on the other side of a wall so noise isn’t a concern for me though…

Here is your CPU temp spike, nothing you can do about it but to endure the 5 seconds inconvenience of CPU fan being loud and wait for the hotfix!
I got an Arctic Liquid Freezer III 420 non Pro non LED version and use it with the All-in-one PMW connector if I rember right (thats what was hanging out of the cabelsleeve) and because I regulate all over the Pump1 on my motherboard this sounds logical.
The Pump is in the Pumpfan header and when the pump goes up the pumpfans do too. My casefans are in the rest of the slots. I got no clue how fast the VRM fan spins but its spinnig after all… I also never regulated those things seperately tbh and I got no fan hub so yeah…
BUT I just tested it again in the BIOS and the pump actually goes to 100% and the fans spin up to 1650 RPM and a little. And Max is specified with 1700RPM. So I think it gets enough power right? Yet another edit: I got it like 3 degrees cooler when closing the game by increasing pump min speed and making the steps until max closer. It goes now up with every 10 Degree by 20% until 100%
Motherboard I did cheap out a bit because I was on a budget but it had all I wanted. It’s an MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI.
Which I read has some problems but was quite popular at the time I decided to buy it.
Some people reported CPU usage spikes when loading/launching games, but no problems when the game was actually running, though they weren’t sure if it was a CPU or motherboard issue.
Thanks for the info but maybe you can understand that I did pay allot of hard earned money and don’t want my hardware to fail to early because it has crazy heat and cool cycles. So it’s not just an inconvenience for me.
