Before patch 5.1.0 gas rats made audio sounds most of the time but after patch 5.1.0 they are making much less sound overall so you are less aware of them or the sounds they are supposed to make do not play at all. They also dont make the breathing in/out sound until they are within 5-10 meters of you and never make sounds if they are around any corner even if you and the gas rat are within a couple steps of each other, they only start making sounds when either you or the gas rat move around that corner and you see each other.
