Rolling Steel is a short linear mission and is quite fun, but it has the potential to be the most replayable mission in Darktide. Each train car is a modular chunk, they are mini sections of map. You can make lots and lots of these chunks and then arrange a random selection of them for the train.
Copy the rolling steel mission in-engine game file 10-20 times. Give each of these copies a random selection of the modular train cars randomly arranged. Then when you choose the rolling steel mission in Darktide’s mission select screen it will randomly pick one of these 10-20 copies behind the scenes and load it. And you have the most replayable mission in Darktide.
I agree the fact that, there should be some sort of variable that makes the map interesting to play again, because of variables and differences everytime.
a different layout with wagons of the train, disposition of enemies and different design could be cool as well.
And those minigame should be shorter and fewer. it feel like it took more than 50% of the playtime if you’re the only one that do the minigame.
They should add more cargos to compensate the time.
I have suspicion that the playtime of the map was too short while they testing it. so they increase the minigame duration instead of expanding the train.
I’d like to see more Operations in general. The roughly 30 min length of the average mission isn’t super long, but more than once I’ve been in a position where it overlaps with another commitment. Rolling Steel has given me more opportunities to play the game when I’ve got smaller batches of time to kill.
In the mean time, though, Rolling Steel is definitely set up to be modular and more replayable just on its own. The timer would probably have to be extended a little bit then (because it’d be harder to rush if you weren’t sure what was coming), but that’s not a big deal. I always love train levels. This one isn’t an exception, and I’d love to see it made even better.
