Since its release, Darktide has undergone numerous updates. Below, I will evaluate each major update by rating them, starting with the Talent Tree overhaul.
1. Talent Tree Overhaul + 2023 Anniversary Update:
This was an excellent update. It completely revamped the talent tree, significantly enhancing gameplay depth and replayability. The anniversary update also added two new maps, a special mission with the Twin boss fight, introduced the stimulant mechanics, and included several new weapon variants. Overall, an outstanding update.
2. Path to Redemption Update (April 2024):
This update introduced the Deed Point system, allowing players to earn profile frames, weapon skins, and equipment skins through accumulated points. It also added a new enemy: the Dreg Gas Grenadier. While this enemy significantly bolstered the overall combat strength of opposing forces, the content of the update was seen as insufficient. Furthermore, the Deed Point exchange system was updated slowly. Overall, the update felt lacking.
3. Secrets of the Mechanicus Update (June 2024):
This update introduced a lengthy new map along with new weapons: the double-barreled shotgun and the iron pickaxe. While the overall content was considered average, the addition of a new map provided some fresh gameplay. A decent but not exceptional update.
4. “Rolling Steel” Update:
This update overhauled the weapon upgrade system, replacing the previous random talent acquisition with a system that allows players to select talents directly during weapon progression. This significantly increased the probability of obtaining top-tier weapons. The update also introduced a new map, “Rolling Steel,” where players must stop a heretically hijacked train from crashing into the Mobian 53rd Regiment’s stronghold. Additionally, it added a new NPC for the havoc mission mode—Commissar Ducan.
5. Darktide Second Anniversary Update:
This update introduced the havoc game mode and a new map—Dark Evangelism. In terms of storyline, it unveiled the Nurgle cult that had been lurking behind the scenes. New weapons were added, including the two-handed power sword and the two-handed force sword, while the Ogryn received the heavy lumbering gun. However, the havoc mode was not particularly engaging, as it primarily involved endlessly escalating difficulty. Overall, the update content was solid, though it fell slightly short compared to the first anniversary update.
**6.**Nightmares & Visions Update (First 2025 Update):
This update introduced the “Mortis Trials” mode—a light roguelike experience set in fixed environments—and also reworked the Ogryn’s talent tree. While the addition of a new mode was notable, the Mortis Trials were seen as significantly less engaging than the Chaos Wastes mode in Fatshark’s previous title, Warhammer: Vermintide 2. Overall, a decent but underwhelming addition.
7. Battle of Tertium Update (June 2025):
This update introduced relatively little new content, primarily reordering mission sequences and adding concluding cutscenes to each level, including an animation related to the betrayal of Captain Wolve. While the new content was minimal, the update did introduce a new playable class. Overall, a modest but meaningful addition.
8. Bound By Duty Update (September 2025):
This update added a new map for the “Mortis Trials” mode, along with two new talent specializations within the mode itself. A new enemy type was introduced: the Scab Plasma Gunner. This enemy effectively addressed the previous combat balance issues—where shotgun troopers had limited range and snipers required long preparation time—by posing a significant and consistent threat, giving players a considerable challenge. Additionally, Veterans received a new weapon, the Power Falchion, though it is largely considered a novelty and is far less effective than the standard Power Sword. Overall, a solid but unexceptional update.
9. Darktide Third Anniversary Update (Released December 2nd):
This update introduced a new class: the Hive Scum, along with a new battlefield map whose visual style left a strong impression. The new class offers decent gameplay variety (though it was somewhat disappointing that it wasn’t a Tech-Priest or Skitarius from the Mechanicus). Overall, the content added was quite substantial.
I absolutely loved the penance system in path to redemption. It gave me loads of hours of goals and content. It also pushed me to play all classes fully which is very valuable for general knowledge in DT. You get to figure out the roles and scope of the other classes.
