Hi, I love Darktide but I would like to give you some feedback about gameplay.
Dreg Tox Flamers and Dreg Tox Bombers are not fun.
They just spew green everywhere, which completely stops the game for me. There is nothing to do but wait for the green to go away to continue playing. This is boring.
I would not suggest to remove them, but isn’t there something you can do to make the green go away faster? Like at least twice as fast.
Honestly an active population cap on AOE spam Specialists would be great - even for the higher difficulties, though how feasible that is given the current, very persistent bug issues remains to be seen. 3+ Tox bombers active at one time, throwing nades with pinpoint precision from out of sight can turn even cakewalk runs into nightmares very quickly.
Or just code Bombers to not throw grenades without direct sight of the player being targeted.
So… I’ve heard this sentiment before, not going to pretend that everyone loves tox gas. But I do not understand how one gets from “enemy area denial abilities” → “stops the game”. I can see why it’s disliked, most things that punish the player are, so maybe it’s that avoidance doesn’t provide a thrill?
The ground is lava, or tox, so the danger is heightened and you must think differently than otherwise. How is this not a richer experience? If anything the tox bomber is a greater threat than fire because it can stack a huge AoE, slow down level progress, and applies lots of corruption to those who can’t tank it.
If anything, it has an appreciable difference to it’s flame counterpart unlike the Flamers who are pretty much the same. I’ve found nothing brings the team together like an unhealthy smattering of tox gas
It is true that there is a a glimmer of hyperbole in my statement. The game doesn’t stop in the sense that everything stops moving. Time keeps moving forward, but from my perspective of looking at my screen, all I see is green. So even though stuff keeps happening, I see none of that until the green goes away and I can leave the corner I’m trapped in.
And before you comment that I should not be in a corner in the first place, I will remind you that several maps are made in such way that you are effectively in a corner very often because that’s where the loot is. And I always loot everything.
Speaking of which, it’s also been my experience that an increasing number of players no longer take the time to loot and just rush ahead. In some occasion, they even complain that I’m taking too long, even though the end screen eventually shows a sub 30 minutes time. But I digress.
This, or halve (or more) their throwing range if throwing from out of line of sight. There’s little fun counterplay against a special who can sit somewhere you cannot reach or shoot and continuously lob grenades that cover such a large area.
well if you got all chars maxed out and sit on on heaps of resources you start to not bother anymore.
there´s a mindmap already of “essential” crates that usually contain the clip/kit or stim that keeps you going, other than this ideal-line it costs more to detour than it nets in results
usually i take into calculation what my momentum forward cost me in ammo/health, what kind of box/crate even is there to “explore” and what item it could contain to improve the run.
if the answer is “none” the economic decision is to skip it.
You talk as if mission time was an important factor. While I understand the interest of speedrunning solo games, to me it makes no sense in the context of a coop game like Darktide.
Also, I understand you may not need the loot, but don’t you at least want to kill all the enemies? I sure do, for I really care about completing my 1 million kill penance.
Don’t get me wrong, deliberately wasting everyone’s time by refusing to move forward is disrespectful. But I don’t think looting and killing enemies (ie: playing the game as intended) is time wasted. After all, we are all here to purge the heretics and liberate Atoma, not to run to the ship like cowards.
One thing about bombers that makes them crazy strong and nobody is talking about is that gas is volumetric. That means if two bombers throw a grenade each in one spot, the gas clouds will get progressively bigger, instead of stacking upon each other. While this is very unique and not many games employ such mechanics, it’s the reason why you might see these huge gas chambers made by 2-3+ bombers endlessly chucking their grenades in one area.
I did not know about the volume expansion. I think you are right, there are more often than not more than one Tox Bombers at the same time far in the background. So that explains the green ocean.
I also fondly remember the pre-xbox times when we were fighting real hordes and not the current reduced enemy count. Now the game director just spawns specials to keep you busy hoping you won’t notice the battleground is mostly empty.
As for your first point, I refuse to play Havoc. The green/yellow/red/pink colored enemies just destroy my suspension of disbelief. I play Darktide because I want to live my 40k fantasies. Havoc feels like Mario Bros with colored-swapped Koopa Troopas: really insulting.
Finally, I can say with confidence that I have never finished a mission under 20 minutes (except the horrible train mission and the insipid twin boss fight). In fact, I almost never sprint unless there is an emergency like when someone is down. After all, I play Darktide to relax.
Same here. And I also don’t like Havok and play it only with my friends sometimes because it’s the only way they feel any progress otherwise anymore.
I also look after people who try (!) but can’t keep up, and I move explicitly slow when someone spams the “go there” tag repeatedly. Sometimes I even stop in their plain sight (preferably in front of a checkpoint they just tag-spammed 100 times) and admire the architecture around me for a moment.
Disclaimer: I do try to keep up myself if a team just moves very efficiently through a map, or even play the spearhead if a team seems to be unable to proceed. The above applies to reckless rushers and tag spammers.
On-topic: I’m okay with Tox Flamers and Bombers per se, but I agree with the OP when they spawn in ridiculous numbers.
