Downloading the game takes up over 100 gigs

When downloading the game through Steam, it takes up over 100 gigs for the game to download. I still don’t have it downloaded currently, because I have 135 gigs set aside for the game, and Steam says I don’t have enough disk space to continue downloading the game. Steam said the game was only 3/4 of the way finished downloading. Why is it taking up so much space, and how do I get it to stop? I’ve already deleted a bunch of stuff in frustration that in hindsight I probably shouldn’t have, and I don’t want to keep doing that.

If you navigate to ‘Settings’ → ‘Storage’ and select the appropriate drive from the drop-down, how much space does Steam recognise as available there?

is it your main drive? windows keeps space open for temporary usage, if i look with TreeSize:

windows keeps roughly my 16gb RAM’s worth of space free for temporary usage

if you have 32GB RAM windows would try to keep that much space free, and that would mean you just about bottleneck with 100GB+ from DT

135.49 gigs free, which this is an external ssd that I have exclusively for stuff that I want to be playing. I also have a 2 TB external hdd that I use to transfer games between since it’s faster than redownloading everything, because it takes about 5 hours to download Darktide. I’ll try restarting my pc again to see if that helps.
