I was so excited for this game, honestly, still am. Most of the problems are solvable, BUT - they need to be solved, and that’s not a given. I immediately signed up for the closed beta, cancelled plans to be able to play it during the weekend, and… I kept trying, getting annoyed, leaving, then trying again, to get disappointed again.
So I’ll start with The Good:
The atmosphere is phenomenal. It feels WH40K, which is all I can ask for.
When the game reaches its peak - it feels amazing. Hoards of enemies coming at you, squad members covering each other while falling back, explosions, screams, blood, headshots. Wonderful! Too bad it doesn’t happen as much as it could
The music is amazing. Honestly, one of the best fits for a game I’ve ever experienced. Really impressive
Aaaand… The Bad:
First off - I’m playing on a Ryzen 5 5600X with a OC 3700Ti. I easily run games like Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings, Darktide runs HORRIBLY. Almost unplayable, the FPS dips and the jitteriness are so bad that it made me stop playing a few times, actually made my eyes hurt. I did notice that more people with AMD systems complain about it than Intel ones. This is all with DLSS turned on, and graphics set to Low. It is hopefully a solvable issue because I am not going to play a game that runs like this, gives me an actual headache and looks really bad
We all know already but come on. Mouse sensitivity? And make sure it’s not a slider only please, let us input floats.
Enemies… All the “Regular” sized enemies just feel and look exactly the same. Yeah I understand there’s variations and some have armor and some have guns… But they’re not exciting. The hound is always the same, the big mutant thing is always the same, you don’t see multiple hounds together or you don’t feel that encounters are actually different. They’re all the same… The WH40K universe has so much variety to offer, Nurgle mutations offer so much creativity, kinda feels like a missed opportunity…
The biggest problem is that all enemies require the same treatment: Shoot everything you have at them. I don’t feel the existence of soft spots you need to pay attention to, some mechanics to bring down a big enemy, to have to work as a team to bring them down, for Ogrins to draw their attention so you can fire some Crit spot on their back or something… It’s just bland.
The loot feels really unrewarding not because of the progression system but because of the starting gear. Your first melee weapon is already somehow mowing down 5-10 enemies with each swing. It feels ridiculous… I mean I’d love to be able to do that, after a week of grinding the game, to make it feel impactful. On the other hand, as a Veteran player, you feel like your Lasgun is your biggest enemy. Who ever met a soldier that can’t aim, shoot and move at the same time? And a veteran at that? It doesn’t make sense that another Lasgun that does the exact same thing has more “mobility”. In most cases I’d rather just run and melee with the block + push mechanic, if timed correctly, it’s absolutely almost always more viable than using a lasgun. (Unless you need to shoot an enemy sniper, and even then it’s so much easier to close the distance using cover instead of awkwardly standing there trying to aim with 30FPS)… Weapons and new gear should feel different, look a little different, offer some perks, not just improve stats that affect your basic ability to move and play the game.
Classes are truly unbalanced. I feel that a group of 4 Ogrins will always be stronger than 4 Veterans. They’re bigger, stronger, they can do objectives more easily because they don’t get slowed down by carrying things and their weapons are insanely strong compared to, again, the lasgun. Yeah I haven’t progressed that much (because it’s truly unplayable for me) but it shouldn’t be that way for level 10 players neither. There should be things that different classes really struggle to do, so that other classes can have a point in existing.
Player communication is non-existent. The ping system if clunky, has very little options (and considering I had to lower my DPI to 300 in order to play with my mouse sensitivity it’s also so hard to use), and even when your character says something like I need ammo, it’s absolutely lost in the general chaotic nature of the game. It should be a lot more visible, loud and overall meaningful.
All in all I really hope Fatshark can iron out these problems for the game’s release, or improve upon, but some of the things I feel are not as easily fixed as improving performance. I’m hopeful, but also kind of disappointed, we’ll see. I won’t be playing the beta anymore because honestly, I’m just not enjoying myself
It really feels like the game needs another year in development, and some things re-worked entirely…
All things considered about Ogrins, it’s totally normal for him to be stronger, within warhammer if he wasn’t so submissive and strong he would simply be executed and destroyed from the living surface of the entirety!
I think complaining about their effectiveness is just not knowing warhammer 40k…
About the dogs I agree that several appearances and even on all the enemies would be great! But we must not forget that it is a bit like uniforms and that it is rare to see them with different armor or helmets etc.
The dogs, I have already fought several simultaneously, and the concern that they have encountered is that they destroy all the equipment if they miss the slightest opportunity, so it’s to be taken with a grain of salt.
The fact of adding sensitive points are on the elite! The back without armour, the head, the melee or the distance according to the target.
But beware, in my opinion there is no point in a classic enemy having a sensitive point other than the head…
And the communication, I think that depends on the community unfortunately and that it will be necessary to be surrounded by it is fundamental ally who will be rare or that it will be necessary to find! Especially level 1 missions, we realize that a majority do not share, rush, or do not think.
This is a video game, not a lore book reading session.
I read enough Wh40k, thank you. The game we are both talking about has 4 classes, of which one easily outclasses the rest. “Not knowing Warhammer 40k” doesn’t equal the fact that 90% of the community can just play Ogrin because he’s OP. Well then, that would also not be “Knowing Warhammer 40k” demographics-wise, would it now?
I think this guy either has barely played the game (as he mentions himself in his post) or at the most has played at a very cursory level, the majority of the community does not play ogrin, the majority of the community seemed to be a fairly healthy-ish mix of classes, with more often then not more players playing veteran because it is so ridiculously strong compared to other classes (so I think this may be a user issue not a game issue)
In regards to graphics, I am personally running an AMD and havent encountered any issues albeit I do have a fairly high-spec computer and to my understanding quite a few people with less modern builds have run into issues so that may be a problem
In regards to mouse sensitivity I didnt personally have any issues with the sensitivity however any form of customisation would be nice.
In regards to mob variation, I think this user just might not understand the game or how to play it considering there are weak spots on mobs, there are multiple of the same version spawning at the same time, and the combat ramps up rapidly at higher difficulties. And given this is beta and the game can and will be patched and there have already been recorded code messages mentioning many other npc’s yet to be integrated into the game… all there is to say is more is coming.
All in all it seems this feedback was written by someone who didnt really experience much of the game and id suggest actually playing it more at higher difficulties and learning how to play it before posting complaints, the majority of which seem to be unfounded.
Having sat through the most annoyingly stalled out clutch with Ogryn where I could not revive teammates because of snipers and spent a good 3 minutes alone running circles chasing them, I think these situations are going to hurt with his melee range focus and a team comprised solely of them will have very lame game over situations because of how punishing the sniper is.
Though to be fair Veteran feels even more hopeless most times because his gun is bobkus against the common elite enemies. Imagine being ranged damage that can’t deal with most taggable enemies.
I tried 3 different classes. I’ve been a FPS player for around 2 decades, I shot my way through all the missions I played including the “soft spots” you’re talking about (basically - headshots or the backpack of a flamer. What varied variety) You don’t need to become a grandmaster in a game to see the inherent flaws in it. You need to enjoy the gameplay loop from the start.
Talking to me in third person is passive aggressive and makes you look extremely condescending, even though your opinion as “someone who experienced much of the game”, considering it’s a beta and you experienced the exact same thing I did, is very lame.
I’m glad you decided the veteran is “so ridiculously strong compared to other classes”, but it is far from being a fact, although you’re portraying it that way. This user understands the game or how to play it. There is crap mob variation, which other games did a lot better, there’s plenty of examples. The combat ramps up rapidly and always feels the exact same.
and to @Yannick84840 with your completely incoherent comments: I played 3 classes, the Veteran I played the most, seriously get out of your own ass both of you. Or stay there, couldn’t care less. My criticism remains the same and is shared among many other players who are and are not “experienced users” like yourselves.
BTW on a side note, the fact you didn’t have any issues with mouse sensitivity considering there’s literally no setting for that really says a lot about your level of gaming, or in your weird language: this user might not understand how important aim sensitivity calibration is in competitive and challenging FPS games, I suggest actually playing FPS games and getting good at them before being condescending towards other players.
For what’s it’s worth I do agree with a lot of your opinion. Personally I think Zealot is the strongest class due to the toughness reset on the ability + weapon selection.
The most glaring issue is the severe lack in class quality + quantity, and the fact they aren’t even sure if the first additional classes will be free or paid. That’s a major red flag to me that makes all the other issues the game has seem much worse. Whoever thinks all the issues, even as minor as a sensitivity slider, will be resolved at all, let alone launch in a month and change must be new to gaming in the 2000s. Assume the worst, hope the best when it comes to game releases these days. Given the overwhelming quantity of issues, and the fact you’re going to be stuck playing 1 of 4 classes for months and may even have to spend money to get any new classes released after without much build diversity I can’t help but be concerned.
Not having a scoreboard has also made it very difficult to see if certain classes consistently outperform others, or even if I’m performing well at all myself. Seems like 90% of the progress made on UI and QoL in VT2 was left in the Old World.
It is you who take my answer badly knowing that I have given you reason on several points, I am just answering another of your points that I have met and that you obviously do not, it is a pity that you take it that way .
You can run 4 Ogres in Lv 1-3 difficulty because the game is incredibly easy at low difficulty levels.
Ogrins are really good at killing crowds, or CCing elites. Your knockback keeps them staggered while your team deals with other things. Dropping 1 Ogre for a Psyker or Sharpshooter will ensure that elites actually die quickly and Psykers will do it without consuming ammo.
Ogrins are good in melee but on higher difficulties the hordes essentially keep you locked into a place while you’re fighting them. You have your charge, which lets you and your team move a bit but you can’t deal with long range or fast moving threats without wasting a huge amount of ammo.
Having an Ogrin that can make a hole in a horde for a sharpshooter/psyker to kill the specials is nice but going 100% Ogrin doesn’t seem like it is a viable way to do the hardest difficulty. 2 maybe because the trait that makes damage not interrupt rez is very useful in the clutch situations where you need it.
I think the performance problems are due to their ‘low’ settings basically being Cyberpunk’s Medium/High settings. On Low with DLSS to performance I get ~80-120 @2160p. I got a massive performance boost when I upgraded my drivers (most of the stuttering was gone), in case you haven’t tried that yet.
Ping system needs to be fleshed out a bit more. Not having a ping context on med packs (or one that works reliably) makes it hard to communicate.
Playing Deeprock Galactic makes me really appreciate having a button that shouts a generic cheer ('Rock and Stone, Brothers!). This would be a nice polish addition.
This game would really benefit from HDR.
It can be very difficult seeing in the darkness and the enemy silhouettes are harder to pick out. Maybe bumping up their brightness or saturation compared to the rank and file would make them stand out.
