Cry Havoc! Event Feedback

I almost didn’t write this post, since I mentioned that FS cracked the code for “Sufficient” events in my last Event Feedback post, But it’s tradition at this point. So this one will be short, since there’s nothing to complain about.

One could argue it’s a bit of a moot point to have the event tied to the new Havoc mode since folks would be playing that regardless, but I believe I mentioned having events tied to new stuff awhile back, so I’d be going against past-me if I made that argument here.

But past-me has always been a jerk to present-me, so consider the argument made. Instead, I feel like this would have been a fine opportunity for a “Community Event”. Having each havoc complete contribute to a big pool, with higher levels contributing more, and everyone getting the trinket upon completion, would have been a more engaging way to run this specific event.

Of course, it would have been better if Havoc mode itself was better, so perhaps the lack of confidence was warranted.

In summary, this Event was thus as mid as mid can be. If I was making a tier list, which I probably should, this would be smack dab in the middle. A True Neutral event that left no impression one way or another, and wouldn’t surprise me if people didn’t even know was going on.

The event also rewards players for completing missions with sub-30 players, which means all new players are getting event rewards just by playing the regular game. I’m leveling up an alt account, so I got the reward on that by playing Heresy missions before I got it in my main account.

Ah, yes, you’re correct. I had forgotten that aspect since I’ve been doing nothing but Havoc.

Not sure if that’d change my opinion much if any. In fact, it kinda reinforces the notion that this is a bit of a throw-away event. Trinket’s not bad though, especially if you’re a big fan of the number ‘2’.

I always feel that community events are meaningless. The numbers involved are so massive that individual contribution seems pointless. I just play whatever’s on the menu and expect that whatever analyst has set the number predicted a reasonable one… like it just feels so artificial.

If it was “see how high you can get for fun” vs. “can you reach X by Y or else no treat” then that would resonate a bit more with me. As it usually goes, unless there’s some sort of narrative event going on that changes based on the result it would just feel bad for the game to offer a reward and then not deliver.

Speaking of narrative events, there’s a really good case for them in Darktide and I wish they’d lean harder into it. Every time they’ve put on an event (grims, nurgle beasts, etc.) I’ve felt the positive impacts with players in game and it’s really lovely – and some of these have been some pretty low-effort variations yet they still feel great.

Hmm, having there be a narrative consequence for failing a community event intrigues me.

Also, I feel the same way whenever the event is something I was going to do anyways.
