I agree that this points to a more general issue with Psyker : they have the worst base Toughness, Health, Stamina and Mobility, but in exchange they get infinite ammo (Assail notwithstanding) and use Peril instead. However this is kind of a lopsided exchange.
One of the problems is that Peril management is a joke and any level 30 player with more than 50 hours under their belt would agree. Psyker is a very far cry from Sienna in VT2, where opportunities to vent are very valuable. And most Staves have become quite strong to keep up with everyone else, at least compared to launch.
This leads to the Meta being ‘spam staff as much as possible’ and ‘put yourself in situations where you can spam staff’.
When I pick Trauma staff I could literally spend 95% of the game spamming M2 and control everything, as long as I dodge correctly. And still get Best Damage on the board. This often applies also to Voidstrike and Flamestorm.
These builds quickly get boring as hell, and if you’re not macroing the primary spam you also get cramps eventually (at least I did).
I agree with the poster that said the best solution is to rework primary fire on Voidstrike, Voidblast, and Surge. There’s no reason for them to have the same primary fire, and no reason for it to be spammable at high rate of fire.
I would hate if the talent tree or psyker mechanics more generally were touched somehow, as I think other things are in a good place.
One simpler solution I see is to simply lower the rate of fire of primary to a point where you can no longer handle hordes with it. And do something to counter the macro use of course. If the rate of fire of normally just spamming M1 was a reduced to a third of what it is now, then you could easily get overrun. The real issue is that it’s good at everything in it’s current state.
surge staff spam has been a thing since its rework, it was even more powerfull back then, if you got into it since 2 months you havn’t experienced the thrill of its prime
Okay, but that doesn’t reflect my experience in game. Almost every psyker I see is playing smite or assail and seem to ignore their staff most of the time. If there have been people exploiting such builds they must have been extremely rare. Popularity has definitely increased lately.
I would add that the surge effect of 2 projectiles on critical should only applies to primary.
Let me guess. You don’t play auric damnation?
smite is annoying as hell, and you can still go to auric damn with it… and be totally useless but still here.
Assail, is clearly really too strong in not high intensity missions. But in an auric maelstrom, I have never seen a psyker trying to use only assail.
