When you open a trial chest you are meant to be shown what type of trial it is but sometimes when opening them there is no information about what type it is so you have no idea what the enemies will be.
To me it seems it happens only when the chest is on the final part of the map, when the current goal indication is “Find the shadow bridge”
But yeah not knowing what will spawn at your face is a bit of a bugger
