Eventually want to make a full post about this in the gameplay feedback section. All though people have been complaining about it for almost as long as Darktide has been released. But I was just going through some of my saved clips and found this gem:
It’s funny, frustrating, and sad in equal measure.
My younger stepbrother got a good roll for his Bolter that can actually stagger Bulwarks through their shields, and it’s saved his life quite a few times. That being said, Bulwarks’ hitboxes (particularly for their shields) are awfully out of coherency with their models.
I think all Bolters with high enough collateral can. Mine usually has zero problems with it. The reason the Bulwark’s Shield didn’t open was because he was just Brain Bursted, and that stagger animation had priority.
I can’t really speak for it then, I haven’t actually used the Bolter since before Archivum Sycorax’s release. I usually only use the weapons unique to the class, unless I get a good roll as a mission reward.
i think the shieldhitbox is supposed to move out of the way (in sync with the animation) but doesn’t.
it can’t be intentional, if they put so much effort into making the animation look so exposed
Yeah, the animations are just a bit skew-whiffed. I’ve noticed that while I’m in the Meatgrinder that Bulwark shields are also a bit out-of-sync with their models. Sometimes you’ll hit a Bulwark from the side with your weapon and it’ll even make contact with them but it still counts as a shield hit.
The actual hitbox definitely doesn’t correspond to what we see.
Most of the time it feels like a cylinder split in half and it must switch to something else when the bulwark is about to strike to give a frontal opening.
I get the gameplay intention (front+shield = nono, back = yes you got it, good boy!, oh he’s about to strike, he opened the door = also yes-maybe), but it can be frustrating as you can’t rely on what you see and where you aim/strike.
