1250 hours played, still a bit underwhelmed with Psyker

I used to be a Psyker main, but was personally a bit disappointed with the update and the “Gun Psyker” build not playing the way I wanted/hoped it would.

Aside from the “Gun Psyker” builds, I think the Psyker in WH40k lore is much more interesting overall than what we got to play in Darktide.

Personally, they just lack the “big boom” unstable wizard gameplay mechanics I was expecting. Their animations are so boring and lackluster.

I wanted to be someone you’re afraid of in your squad, but relieved to have when they suddenly start to clear out rooms full of enemies by themselves.

Someone you never could trust because they might get possessed at any minute.

One more thing that I want to add here is that I think that Fatshark making the game so not serious with all the jokes and banter was a bit of a mistake.

The reason i like the Cadian Veteran voice so much is that he has voicelines that sounds like someone that suffer from PTSD and paranoia.

Someone that actually feel like they exists in the Grimdank (pun) world of Warhammer 40k.

A bit more serious voice acting directing/writing would have gone a long way to make the world more believable.

I think that Fatshark could have made the Blitzes more interesting and decouple some of the staff abilities from the weapon and make them Blitzes.

I’m not saying that I think that the Psyker is bad, but rather that in comparison to the other classes, Psyker doesn’t really fill that class fantasy for me.

Humour is probably the main coping strategy in the grim dark future of M42.

Warhammer 40k has always had an undertone of silliness, it began as British sci-fi satire and that still peeks past the super serious maximum edge grimdank, and I personally appreciate that it’s there somewhere.

Yep I agree with you with the origin of Warhammer and all of that, but I just wish there were s better balance because right now everything is a walking meme.

It removes all of the “horror” aspect from the game whene everything is a joke.

I mean there is Warhammer games feom the oast that doesn’t meme 24/7 or for example Aliens: Fireteam Elite or Isolation that are memeqble, but didn’t lean into that and were much better games for it.

Alice Halowette is a meme, Zola is a meme, Morrow being in every battle is a meme, Mazosi is a meme, Hadron is a robot mommy meme… it’s just too much!

I would think this is exactly what an Assail psyker does, wipe rooms full of light/medium enemies by themselves. The clearing power of a psyker between Blitz abilities and staves is tremendous as long as they’re not all carapace armored. Psykers have tremendous killing power, they’re just a bit squishy.

Likewise, the visual effects of a flurry of brilliant cyan blades and the “tink-tink-tink” sound effects on something like Assail, while subtle, are also terrifying as you hear all the shard penetrations through flesh. The understated auditory nature of that lethality I think is quite neat, as much as I’m also a huge fan of the thunderous report of the game’s autoguns doing magdumps.

Hrm, we’ve got a rigid adherent to Imperial law suffering from tons of past trauma at the hands of rogue enforcers, another is bitterly cynical and paranoid and constantly drawing attention to the Imperium’s atrocious nature and engaging in fatalistic humor, and another believes they’re literally dreaming everything happening because reality is so terrible.

The Cadian Veteran is bitter and spiteful, it’s a great voice, but I don’t think it’s particularly more mentally damaged than any of the Psyker characters.

I think it’s more the issue that they’re currently cariacatures more than characters due to a lack of any fleshing out of the characters. Most of the NPCs are fulfilling their role as part of the retinue, but they are pretty one note and yes, that’s where the dialogue is flagging a bit. But I wouldn’t say they are memes, especially if you ignore the parts of the community that try to make them memes.

Probably true, but he sells the “average joe” sent on a suicide mission into a hellhole with a “squad” of individuals who can either become possessed or shoot you in the back at any moment.

Maybe it’s just me, but I find it easier to relate to him and the male savant psyker, especially the Cadian’s demeanor.

The male savant psyker has some great and very interesting voicelines from his time as an enforcer, but I wish there were more of it and just a bit more seriousness in the mission structure and “main characters” (they suck).

Edit: Just want to add: I have created my own character like everyone else in Darktide. I don’t want to be meme-Saltzpyre from Vermintide.

I think that is my real issue: it was ok in Vermintide with premade characters, but since Darktide’s are custom made, the meme dialogues just feel out of place a lot of times.

More serious missions though please like a rescue mission for example.

No, they went the right direction.

What you’re looking for a single player experience, that’s where that kind of lore-intense, heavy, grim atmosphere could give its best results.

In a frenitic shoot and gun co-op game it would just get in the way, or worse it would hinder the fun.
I think you’d despise it if it were in this game.

This is borderline impossible to actually implement in terms of gameplay mechanics. Nobody is going to play, or want to play with, a class that has a chance of just going “lol, imma wipe my own team now because lore”.

Not for me. I, for one, was happy when they replaced that one medicae voice set that was a little too real. I don’t need that when I’m playing videogames.

I’m guessing you haven’t played the other classes if you find psyker underwhelming :person_shrugging:
