I think it is because the game that was delivered changed half way through development. There was a very specific direction the game was headed but they had the alter course.
Purely speculation but my theory is that the goal was that the voice selections we make in character creation were originally intended to be separate classes. Someone made a VERY difficult decision regarding the scope of design being too large and things needed to be massively culled down in order to meet a release date (I’ve heard that it may have had something to do with a contractual obligation to nVidia). From there the chaos of the release began. The original 12 classes they had were hamfistedly smashed into 4 - since they had invested so much into voice acting assets at this point it would have been a massive waste to cut out the other ~16 voice actors. They had to scramble to redesign things and at least get the game out on a basic level.
To their credit, they did a good job from what I can tell, but the hallmarks of having to make a massive design pivot are everywhere in game.
You can see it in how far behind crafting was in design. You can see that in mods like weapon customization or for the drip. You can see it in the assets that were clearly designed for classes not featured in the game.
Edit: you can also see it in the locks. They are a thinly veiled means to draw out playtime through RNG to cover for missing content.

Content is finished, we just gotta wait for the Live Service charade to catch up with whichever update they plan to pair the content with.

Well, the game on steam has a 35% discount for the holidays, the price of the game at full retail is $39.99, going rate for a new game is closer to 60-70 these days. Additionally, the traitors curse content and all maps up to today were a free update. As a player that doesn’t buy skins, I’m quite content.
Did they announce if it was going to be a paid dlc or free update?
Lastly, before I get blasted, I’m not here to condone MTX as I would be happy to pay for DLC and be able to earn cosmetic currency through simply playing. (Gears 5 did it the best IMO) The forums last year were on fire when we found out about MTX so no need to go down that path again.

In the competition they announced one of the awards was DLC, I am happy to pay for DLC but not MTX as they are outright predatory. As the pricing is absurd. Even a season pass I would be ok with but not the current MTX model.
If the season pass would include the skins that would be perfect, now the drip and predatory monetization model makes me want to vomit.
For F’s sake please be better fatshark….

it better come along with Scoped Ryza Hotshot Lasgun, with ammo Back-pack and a None Standard ammo System along with a hotshot marksman rifle and a Bolt/Plasma pistol.

There are multiple items shown that we just can’t get. Those cosmetics for the 4 classes that keep getting shown over and over in trailers and advertising, the Guardsman officer headset is shown on the site, a large book for the priest is shown in Steam store art.
I expect if/when they get added, they’ll all be MTX, because it’s Fatshark.
Blaming Tencent for this doesn’t seem right either when several of their games aren’t shoving in MTX in a way that’s this bad, and these sorts of negative things have gone beyond just Darktides monetization both for this and their previous games.
