Skitarii Alpha Primus is coming to Warhammer 40,000: Darktide!

Yeah, and there’s no real way to power something like that with physics. Now I know they have crazy technology, but it’s all just hand-waving for rule of cool. There’s no consistency.

Which was totally fine for 40k when it first started and was much more openly silly, but now people take it waaaaay too seriously, and it shows.

This^
People have been fighting tooth and nail about “REALISM!!!” and “NOT LORE ACCURATE!” against anything from simply females looking like actual females to new tide classes…

Miss the days when video games and fiction in general were just about cool stuff, fantasy and letting your mind go absolutely wild with possibilities…

Silly stuff still exists like Space Wolf marines riding Wolves in Space or Sisters of Silence warships using ASL to communicate with each other across other ships.

It’s just the whole rest of the lore where humans cant exist without the most death and suffering possible. The lore itself has no chill.

someone pointed it out in another thread earlier and then i looked into it, but apparently this is an actual gw retcon thing. after looking into it, video games and all other media as far as i’ve seen always depicted them as real-world lasers, ever since dawn of war depicted it that way. then sometime in 2024 or so, gw made statements that lasguns are now yellow, and shoot star wars blaster projectiles, and they showed some old art to support this angle. since then every game has depicted las this way.

if you look at the skitarii trailer, pay attention to what the servoskull shoots. yellow starwars blaster type of thing. the other lasguns get to stay red which is the first time i’ve seen that

I hope the lasguns are star wars things doesn’t stick forever and the tide goes the other way, and there’s certainly enough examples in media of the red beams. Dawn of War used red beams and so does darktide and some others. Red beams is way, way more stylish, and honestly we already (more or less) have star wars blasters with regular guns shooting tracers.

Beam weapons are still exotic and only a few are out there, like some navy vessels have them as missile interceptors.

One thing you need to know about GW is that they’re absolutely frothing at the mouth whenever someone else gets more toys. They take jealousy to the next level. I would not be surprised in the slightest if they simply saw how big starwars still is and wanted to copy things from it.

I see it more as GW rips off everyone.

We have mutant navigators from Dune, lightsabers from star wars, great good from trek, Samurai with rifles held like swords. (both tau)

WE have mech suits from Gundam/robotech, we have Knights Templar. We have not one devil, but four.

We have Tolkien elves and dwarves (Eldar and votann.)

We have pirate kingdoms (rogue traders) and Giger Xenomorphs with guns and a thing for the color purple.

We have gyrojets from the 60s and chainswords.

But overall, while GW does rip everyone off, sometimes they just get something even more ‘right’ then the people they ripped off did. Lasguns are one of those. Guard is basically a WW2 army with lasers. Works well where it is already at… changing it to rip off star wars even more is a mistake.

Technically the gun could work exactly the same, except one version is burst and the other is continuous. Burst makes sense for cartridge/pack longevity tbh.

Nah, what you say IS true, but what you’re missing is projectile vs solid beam. Projectile is a moving dot, solid beam, on burst or constant, is going to look like a solid beam. Burst will just limit beam duration, won’t make it look like a projectile, even if technically photons are traveling in a burst either war, that’s only really something you’d notice over orbital distances.

“Good artists copy, great artists steal” as they say

Firewarrior from like 2002-3 (not quite sure) also depicted lasguns as blasters.

Lasgun at 0:39

True, though I ‘think’ firewarrior was a technological limitation rather then an artistic choice. Very few games have had ‘star trek style solid beam weapons.’ It is contemporary with Fire Warrior, but was bigger budget and may have felt obligate to put the time in. (W40K was not well known in 2003, Trek was huge.)

It’s very doable now, but when firewarrior came out it was harder, and how to make it work in a game was a question… and would players react badly if they could?

Star Trek Elite Force 1 really stood out in having a solid beam hand phaser, and most of the time you used a rifle that shot blips, and that was the ‘backup weapon.’

A lot of games sort of compromised (technologically speaking) by shooting a projectile with a tail instead of a solid beam.

Considering the effect of the railgun (3:13) I don’t think making a lasgun beam was in anyway beyond what could have been done in that game.

Also look this

This is from a N64 game

Yeah but it looks awful. It’s kind of in the right direction, true, but it’s… bad.

What they did here from an animation perspective is to create an object which sort of ‘hangs’ in the air for a second, whereas with the laser gattling looks pretty good for it’s day.

Compare that to Elite Force, which really put the time in to beams.

Heresy! How dare you slander Turok 2 Seeds of Evil!? Loading cerebral bore with malicious intent

Goated game BTW

yeah to be clear i think both were explicitly fine for GW back then. even the original art they showed that has star wars type blasters with muzzle flashes, there’s art from the same time period that shows things firing long realistic laser beams

not sure why on earth GW thinks they MUST enforce one type now

I prefer them to be actual lasers personally, it’s weirdly rare to see lasers depicted realistically in media for some reason.

I personally think, for Las Weapons, they should stick to Las Pulses (think temporary Las Beams instead of continous ones) instead of Las Bolts or Las Beams.

Beams seem to be more indicative of things like Volkite in 40K, and Las Bolts are just… boring.

The new yellow sunshine weapons in action :
SPOILER ALERT : it looks f-ing terrible
