I heard it was the best gun.
it does a lot of damage but it is very awkward to use and it barely has any ammo.

Would probably help if you at least told us your class. Personally for Zealot I go back and forth between Boltgun and Shotgun. I find both have their advantages, though I’ve been leaning more towards shotgun for its immediacy in moments I need it. Boltgun I need to be more pre-emptive with (which I personally think is fine for its overall power).
Don’t know how you’ve come to the conclusion Boltgun has low ammo. It’s pretty generous for how much damage it does. Just don’t fire it into every horde you see and it should go far enough.

I find that recon lasguns help me more as a vet, for focusing on specials and weaker elites. Bolter is way better at shredding bosses, or big armored bois. In my experience, my teams and I get hurt more by flamers, bombers, and bursters, so I use recon as i always have ammo for em and it feels more reliable at range. Plus there’s the bonus of just spending less time racking and reloading when you use a lasgun, so you can get into melee more.
The level 30 talent that auto-reloads when you use your class ability does wonders for bolter though.
