Hello and Happy Friday! This week’s question:
If you had to teach a class on one topic, what would it be?
This is lame but I would teach interior car detailing lol
I’m a high school teacher in irl… teaching lots of topics in several classes all day xD
…mmmmmh….
dayum… makes me think xD….
.. probably how our brain “functions”, how hormones influence behavior and what psychological biases we all have and what can go “wrong” in our personal development (and how to realise that and take action)
so yeah, basic psychology to hopefully understand yourself and others a bit better and put everything into an “outside perspective”
I’d like to teach philosophy. In fact, I even have an idea for an assignment that I’d give to my students. The assignment would be to write a convincing argument from one of these two perspectives:
Perspective 1:
The Creation with free will is entitled to self-determination and freedom, regardless of whether the Creator approves or not.
Perspective 2:
The Creation with free will owes the Creator its very existence, therefore the Creator is entitled to eternal gratitude, worship and forced servitude from the Creation.
the answer is 42!
How to fall down safely. Massively underrated skill that can prevent many injuries!
Probably coding or smth I guess
Yeah so I’m going to tell you something in a rambling manner I figured out myself at the age of 24 and has ruled my life since and I think it need to be a class at school.
When you are born you are just a dumb animal driven by biological needs. Need the toilet? Soil yourself. Hungry? Scream and someone will stick a tit in your mouth. Angry? punch yourself in the face or scratch yourself. Don’t want to go to sleep? Yell like the frontman of a thrash metal band and someone will come and keep you company. Behaviour entirely dictated by biological needs.
As you grow basic motor skills are taught, Language, too. The ability to direct your turds into a toilet rather than your own undergarments.
At school it develops and you are taught to write, read, recognise colours, climb a rope for no reason, run around a field, kick a ball, jump a rope and so on.
Then, you get to about 14 years old (ish) and it’s all academic. Numbers, writing, geography (boring), History, Science and so on. BUT
Life seems to stop teaching you how to control the dumb animal at probably the most crucial point of a person life. Hormones are rushing around, the dumb animal is growing up too.
So.. the lesson I would teach is, much of every day of your life is going to be making sure the dumb animal doesn’t take charge and recognizing when the dumb animal tries to flood your body with chemicals and hormones to get at result the dumb animal wants. We don’t soil ourselves on a whim, we don’t scream and get a tit stuck in our mouths ( mores the pity, might solve a lot of problems tbh ).
So this must also extend to; the big dumb animal wants to take control and be reckless to ensure I could stick my penis directly into a woman as often as possible. The big dumb animal wants to spend a fortune on a mindless pointless thing that gives me immense but fleeting happiness. The big dumb animal wants to uppercut someone who’s being utterly idiotic and insulting.
Now the more philosophical of you might thing ‘well this is just self control’ but… I think it’s important to teach people that human bodies are still biological entities with built-in drives that are very hard to override. Hunger, Thirst, Dopamine, Procreation, irrational anger, threat response. Hardwired by millions of years of human experience. The biology is something that often dictates your behavior FAR MORE than you know, or acknowledge or even realise.
Recognising it surely puts you in control. Teach people that.
Heavy I know.
I’ve already taught calc 2, with ~3 days prep time I could give it a go. God I miss the part of my brain that could do ODEs
Grudge-holding.
Financial literacy, something that is severely lacking in the general population.
