Moebian Steel

I’m camping the Mourningstar a bit this morning, and I just heard some new dialogue between Kayex and Rannick about the secret of Moebian Steel being elusive. Rannick responds that he’ll have Hestia see what she can do in the meantime.

This seems to me to be a nod to the mastery system and the associated penances. But the Moebian Steel doesn’t factor into these new systems/capabilities.

After MS was introduced in Secrets Of The Machine God, we got new dialogue and this tease in Unlocked & Loaded:

Following the rediscovery of the Clandestium Gloriana and the secret of Moebian Steel, Enginseer Kayex is attempting to replicate the process in Manufactorum Hl-17-36. But the Traitorous 6th have other plans …

So, we’re on the way to harnessing MS. And I just have to imagine that, after the U&L update kept the 80% cap on weapon stats, that MS is going to be the key to supercharging our weapons to their full potential. Thoughts? Any other bits of dialogue related to Moebian Steel?

listen, the moebian steel thing has been mentioned long before this update and it’s nothing to do with game mechanics. it’s just flavor text, they talk about it being used for tank armor.

I’m not so sure. It’s getting a lot of play for something that’s just flavor.

I need to get the actual text of that dialogue between Kayex and Rannick, because my understanding of it was that Hestia would somehow bridge the gap until the Smelter Complex is operational. I could have misunderstood it.

But assuming I didn’t…with Hestia being a pretty direct link to us (her job being to record our penances, per her intro), and doling out rewards and now weapon skins with the U&L update, I don’t see how her efforts could be interpreted as being related to tank armor.

Putting that aside, the 80% cap is still in place, and I struggle to believe that’s for any reason except that a way to get to 100% will eventually be coming. And if that is the case, why couldn’t the mechanism be Moebian Steel…especially versus some other thing we haven’t had the faintest whiff of yet?

same thing as the ratlings, they’re just flavor, just sometimes you get hit with the ratling convo 4 times more than anyone else and start thinking it’s trying to tell you something.

Sure, but the ratlings don’t have an entire mission dedicated to them, then an update to another mission relating to the crew’s efforts to harness them, nor continued dialogue about them by the people in the know.

I think it’s pretty clear that this is part of some kind of narrative and not idle gossip by a few rejects, like the throwaway lines about genestealers and ratlings and grey knights.

The only real outstanding question imo is if it’ll factor into the item system at all.

It already was supposed to. Because the itemization update was supposed to release with Gloriana. So that thread is pretty much closed already.

But do the itemization update and Moebian Steel actually have any functional relationship? I don’t feel like I’ve heard any dialogue alluding to a relationship.

I‘m with Badwin here - it seems very likely they are planning on some mechanic that’ll allow you to upgrade beyond 80% - otherwise they could have declared 80% the new 100% in the recent update.

And a connection between that upgrade mechanic and the lore piece they dedicated a whole mission to also seems very plausible.

We‘ll see - right now they‘ll leave to grind mastery for a while before touching items again I think.

Finally heard the Kayex/Rannick dialogue again, but didn’t record it or get a chance to transcribe it exactly. But the gist is a bit different from what I originally thought it was. What I got this time, very roughly paraphrased, was:

Kayex: Requesting more resources to smelter complex, the secret of the right of steel continues to elude.
Rannick: I rather thought it might. Very well, I’ll see what Hestia can send your way.

So, Hestia isn’t bridging the gap for the rejects, but maybe bridging the gap with rejects?

I still think Moebian Steel, the efforts around it (both by the crew in-game and by FS), and the Inquisition’s interest in it, point to it being more than just a story beat. But we’ll see!

In related news, it sure seems that Only in Death Does Duty End implies that the Mastery system is being driven, at least in-part, by Dukane, who “has assigned the finest drill sergeants of the 53rd to tutor the rejects in proper weapons drill”.

But is Moebian Steel as rare as Blue Steel?

That’s the question?

(I know I’ve used this one before… but it’s a classic.)

I want to believe @Badwin

How about the red crystals from Ascension Riser 21? Nothing ever came of them either but what if MS and Red Crystals created real red weapons

I don’t know what those things are exactly, but we did get an in-universe explanation/use for them, right? They’re somehow related to the personality scourge feature, which Oska and Sefoni cooked up together.

EDIT: yea here’s a bit more on that from here:

Might have been the chisurgeon introduction! good call

before UnL weapons could go to 540 (iirc) score points, but only 380 of those related to stats.
after UnL weapons can go to 500 scrore points and all those relate to stats (perks and blessings no longer factor in), even though stats themselves still only go to 380.

there is no reason to not tie score and stats 1to1 for comprehension sake since you’re doing a rework, right? yet FS didn’t.
… unless they did, but factored in future 500 stat weapons.

my logic says that there should be 500stat weapons on the horizon.
however my experience says that i’m huffing severe hopium, FS don’t care about logic, sense, comprehension and simply kept 500 score for a pretty number.

Cant wait to use me some blue steel… I mean mobian steel!

But that was after the mission initially launched. And since it’s off the books, by Oska hiding from Morrow, that still doesn’t answer what the actual Warband is using them for. (They mention in mission it’s to break up a deal, so it’s possible that the goal isn’t actually to acquire the materials but to cause tension between the Nurgle Cultists and whoever they are working with).

I still believe that the introduction of Moebian Steel in Gloriana was to be with the crafting update. It’s possible that it will be a 3rd type of crafting material later on but I believe that was the original intention behind it, and atm it only holds lore connotations rather than gameplay ones.

Sure, but that’s how a lot of the lore is playing, and is likely to continue to play, out. Like how we are constantly fighting over Smelter Complex now to keep the heretics from learning how we’re gearing it up to make the new steel.

All of the ongoing dialogue about the steel suggests to me that it’s still a WIP, and that we haven’t seen what it’s really for yet.
