Game runs really smooth, until it suddenly freezes and hard crashes

Issue Type (Required):

Crash - During Play

Issue Description (Required):

On Linux - Zorin 18.
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700X3D
NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 5060 Ti
Game is running on M.2 ssd.

Running game at 2k with DLSS upscale to 4k, alongside x2 frame gen and low ray tracing.

Overall the game runs great in morningstar and on missions, even during large hordes, and even when moving in and out of menu screens.

However at random the game freezes up for about 10-15 seconds and then hard crashes. This has happened in all 3 of the above outlines moments and there was no prior sign of it struggling at all, therefore i cannot predict when or why the crash is happening. however i over the last 3 nights i have tried to troubleshoot, i have only been able to complete 2 missions without it crashing.

I verified the install and no corrupt files were detected, so i uninstalled the game completely and did a fresh install, still happening.

Tried changing various settings around dlss and frame gen, appears to have no effect.

Really wanted to get back into the game, but this is essentially making it impossible-
-a shame as i was considering purchasing the new classes too.
*I have tried both with steam overlay on & off too.

you have render stalls

16:58:43.795 warning: [Profiler] [main] Stall 193 ms on frame 31008:

they add up and become critical causing the crash. likely resource-streaming synchronization problem.

try running Proton Experimental Darktide build

  1. Open Steam → Library.
  2. Find Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
  3. Right-click it → Properties.
  4. Select Compatibility.
  5. Check “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.”
  6. In the dropdown, select Proton Experimental.
  7. Close the Properties window and launch Darktide.

Thanks, I am already forcing experimental.
(Display server is Wayland, not xorg, if that helps)

One thing i’ve just tried is turning frame gen off and enabling v-sync, which appeared to help stop the standard crashes enough to complete two missions…
..But I’ve now just had a different crash instead:

Verifying files now, but this is a fresh install so i am not expecting that to be the problem.

““16:58:48.918 [Lua] INFO [PlayerUnitDataExtension] Panic started. Received state package from the future, this is likely because we haven’t run any fixed frames yet or had a major stall. Received frame (363), last frame (349).””

““17:01:44.341 <>Deadlock detected while waiting on renderer thread. Update was not called for 16.0 seconds. You need to supply a crash dump or a crashify link in the report since we need both logs and crashdump to investigate this.<>””

your system stalls and that causes framedrops and inevitably crashes, i think its a communication problem from VKD3D

id try to clear the shadercache

.steam/steam/steamapps/shadercache/1361210

PS im not a techsupport member, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Appreciate your suggestions never the less.

No folders under the darktide ID in either library’s directory folders, but from the browse local files option within steam i have found the vk3d-proton.cache in:
/home/#user#/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Warhammer 40,000 DARKTIDE/shader_cache

Deleted that, the game launched as if nothing had happened though, then very quickly froze and crashed again.

Have enabled borderless full screen via the config, and disabled player portraits as i found something regarding a long=standing problem with those, to see if it may be linked to either of them.

Updating the thread after further troubleshooting.

Last night the issues only got worse, to the degree where i couldn’t even get into a mission- So i decided to go granular.

Switched to native resolution (4k) and then turned off dlss, frame gen, raytracing etc.
Game ran like crap, but i got through a full mission without fault.

Then activated vsync, and was able to turn dlss back on as ‘performance’-
-this drastically improved the frame rate and made everything smooth again, was able to finish another two missions with no problem.

___
This morning i booted it up and finished another mission before the game then crashed out, this time though it didn’t freeze for a while before-hand, so i figured it must be a different problem.

Turns out it was:

I am wondering whether this, possibly in combination with a ray tracing error, is what was causing the previous problems too.

For now i have added the following to the steam launch command, in hope that it will prevent that problem too:
PROTON_NO_DIRECTSTORAGE=1 %command%

‘Fingers-crossed’ & ‘emperor protects’ etc-
-hopefully this may be helpful to anyone else seeing similar problems.

Try Ge-Proton

IF you use ray tracing, removes it…

But first, try to use GE-Proton.

As always… I would try CachyOS.

You are on the Nvidia driver 595.84

Here mine:

I use Darktide without ray tracing (I have not tested for a long time), in 4K and without problems.

By the way, they will move this thread to Linux Discussion - Fatshark Forums
More and more linux discussions… that’s great!

@FatsharkJulia could use FS techsupport

There won’t be any support.
They officially don’t support linux.

And if you notice, the OP has found a way to play…

I maintain that Bazzite is not good enough due to the delay between updates.

CachyOS or SteamOS (both based on Arch Linux - yes I have heard a video from the arch update developper that explained both projects and their links with Arch linux project) are better choices… and by far.

There are optimizations and the drivers are more up to date on these two distros. I don’t know, however, about Nobara (Red hat branch… so same architecture than Fedora and Bazzite) if it is better (tried it, was disappointed by performances).
CachyOS and SteamOS, however, are clearly easier to use than an Arch Linux. So don’t be afraid because there is the words “Arch Linux”
(and you could always use an AI to resolve problems… better to ask to Gemini (no I don’t sponsor Google.. I have not even Android on my phone - this is just the AI that gives me better answers about Linux) but all can solve your problems)

Hello,

So the game has been much more stable over the last few days after my previous adjustments, but the random render stall crashes do still occur every 3-4 missions.

My OS choice is Zorin, which has otherwise been fine with Helldivers (Based on the same game engine) & other games i play regularly.

Just about to try GE-Proton now, to see if that resolves the crashes once and for all!

Thanks both for your continued replies/suggestions/support

Do you use mods?

If yes, put this as command: --lua-heap-mb-size 2048

(unless you have only 16gb ram, if you have such amount of RAM, don’t do it… if you have more AND use mod, you should put this in launch options of Darktide)

I don’t use any mods, and i have 32gb ddr4 @ 3600mhz.

After a couple hours of testing, GE-proton has not yet crashed, but the general performance is worse and even with lower settings it feels choppy.
This is with GE-Proton"11-5-x86_64" - which was the latest i could see, so idk if there is a better recommended version?

Except going for cashyos… I don’t see
You could always try different proton versions

But changing from bazzite to cachyos would permit you using nvidia drivers 611 instead of the 595 version

From console log
Driver version: 59584 Hardware Accelerated GPU
