Is there any way these two modes could be salvaged? They should theoretically be infinitely playable but I’m tapped out after a single match of either one. Compare that to chaos wastes which a buddy and I put almost 200 hours into in the span of a month or two. On one hand chaos wastes was rewarding because of the high chance for red tier loot but after they reworked how gear is obtained in darktide there isn’t a lot of long term rng grind like vermintide. If they refuse to add a significant amount of free cosmetics as some kind of progression then what would incentivize anybody to actually play either mode? Besides two outfits which seem ridiculously tedious to actually get and are exclusive to the base 4 classes, what is there to actually unlock? What could they even add? I suppose this criticism could be extended to the main missions too and the overall lack of long term engagement but atleast character interactions, tightly designed gameplay, and interestingly designed levels keep me engaged. I can’t even picture in my head more than one mortis trial map from memory and expeditions for some reason gives me the same feeling as the backrooms due to how samey and drab everything looks. Those two modes, and particularly expeditions, really have me asking why we even play.
No. They are poorly designed and lack content. Chaos Wastes offered a lot of new, LARGE maps to explore, with VARIETY of environments / biomes. Not everyone I know liked the roguelite progression, as it could result in some very broken builds, but it was part of the charm.
What is the most important, Chaos Wastes actually offered a sense of challenge, especially for those who did not play modded realm. I actually liked CW difficulty modifiers more than Havocs. That difficulty spike is not present in Expeditions and Mortis Trails. It’s almost like they forgot what makes Darktide enjoyable for anyone who plays this game regularly.
Expeditions’ only use is being counted as mission completion (for penances, maybe contracts), and in the case of Mortis Trials its all the grindy challenges since you can speed them up significantly, i.e. getting +2 ability stacks. Both those modes have flawed foundations and would need to be practically scrapped and rebuild. This will not happen in Darktide’s lifespan.
Really I don’t see how, except rebuilding entirely these game modes.
Maybe Fatshark should listen instead of acting like Microsoft and trying to impose things we never asked (sidenote: I am on linux because of this).
I don’t see the problem with Mortis Trials. I would like it if it had a difficulty higher than auric and if it had a way to shorten the time between waves, but it seems fine in concept. It’s also a great way to get class penances done.
Perso, I don’t like mortis trial for the indulgences.
This looks like arcade / console.
And also, it is so slow… I would have loved, however, a king of hill game mode. Waves, waves and again waves until the end.
But no pause at all between them.
I don’t see it without an extensive resource sink in terms of dev time, and I think by now the devs have gotten the idea that more additions to Expeditions is not going to make the cut and keep people interested or bring new people in. There probably will be one more big update to it, though, if I know FS as well as I do from years of playing their games.
Mortis might eventually get a fourth arena and another character to get an uncoverable backstory; and should there be more classes added to the game, they probably will get some Mortis-specific indulgences to unlock.
What pains me with both Mortis and Expeditions is that they don’t really scale well with their environments. Mortis becomes trivial with how enemy waves work there and players gain in power in each wave, since there’s only so many combinations of enemies to begin with. Individual waves rarely mix more than two special types at a time (and if they don’t they just spam one special type at the players), not to mention how few and far between are the waves of elites in that mode; or just mixed groups of enemies in general.
Yes, there are a million ways those could be salvaged.
But it takes a large coordinated effort of the community (review bomb on Steam and millions of posts on the forum) to make Fatshark change their game design. Just look at how much time and sweat was needed to make them revert the weapon locks.
I don’t think enough people care about Mortis Trials and Expeditions to make that happen.
It’s not that they’ve forgotten, it’s that they’ve never really known. Not even in V2. Weaves are proof of that. Be’lakor, and many of the other CW updates, are proof of that. That time they tried to remove the deed bug, and then backtracked in the face of people complaining about them removing our only way of playing cata deeds, is proof of that. The aborted huntsman rework with its automatic free headshots is proof of that. The itemization systems in all three tide games is proof of that. I’m sure some other people can remember additional instances.
Instead, what Fatshark does is throw $#@! at the wall to see if it sticks. And oftentimes the $%!# they throw is copied from other, more popular games of the zeitgeist. Such as trying to copy Mythic+ for Havoc. Or Overwatch lootboxes in V2. Or using Helldivers for inspiration in expeditions. Etc.
Yeah, that was something for sure. That bug was community’s favourite way of squeezing a bit more fun/suffering from the game. I could never understand why deeds had limited uses otherwise.
I would imagine it was because they wanted lootboxes to still have something for players to grind through after they got all of the reds. Probably why the deed achievement requires 500 of the damn things too.
indeed
All art is derivative. I don’t care where they get their game design ideas from. But I do care about having fun playing Darktide. And I don’t have much fun playing Expeditions nor Mortis Trials.
For me, most of the fun in Darktide is with good old linear missions.
Imagine if all the efforts over the years had been put on just making linear missions better!
you merge these two together, based on their systems and you have something to go on with. I would recommend that.
I spent a lot of time if not most playing chaos wastes in VT 2, expeditions and trials are basically wastes that got split up into two diffirent modes each of which suck, there’s no salvation for them.
for once i agree with your assessment.
I think they can be saved if they put more in them. Mortis is what it is. wave based arena. expedition on the other hand needs a lot more and is very bare bones. so i vote for more resources and money to go towards developing expeidtion.
