Even with the future itemisation rework. I don't think locks will disappear

I mean sure but the athanor is an objectively better itemization and progression solution than the RNG mess of base VT2 and DT

So? It isn’t loot, they wanted loot.

BTW as much as I hate VT2 crafting system, I don’t think athanor is any good either.

tbh idk how much difference there is between vt2 loot and weave items, vt2 loot you can craft yourself it just requires grinding materials which is in essence just “leveling” but at a duration that’s determined by rng

There was definitely more separation between character and item in the base VT2 system. The weave system felt like a secondary talent screen.

Not defending VT2 system either since the (almost) free swapping of traits/blessings killed a lot of “itemness” the weapon would have had. It was some unholy joining of terrible RNG and no endgame progression.

DT2 locks at least do a good job of making the weapons feel like actual things, incentivizing collecting more of it, and building out an armory.

DT system incentivize you to leave

VT2 system made me leave 3 times so idk. :person_shrugging:

did anyone stop playing VT2 because of items, or because of wide changing updates? At least darktide hasn’t had a power nerf on the level of WoM, literally made the game feel like back to basics went live.

Those updates made me take long breaks, I can’t think of any time chests/gearing were anything other than a mild irritance. I’d say its more irritating doing the same things without mass scrapping or having to use mods to be able to upgrade/scrap at the same screen.

The combat and missions are why I play the game. The crafting and itemisation system are at best just an annoyance.

Emperors gift I mostly ignore. Melk’s and Brunt’s are things i rarely utilise now adays, due to the generally low end items that come out of them.

I never played VT1 or 2 so i cannot comment on their crafting systems.

I honestly dont think they will get rid of the locks.

What i would like to see is a greater ability to interact with the attributes of weapons. Even if it was only at an ever multiply cost of percentage improving or you could only change a couple. It would be a nice story element of weapons improving as we do.

Also the difficulty in getting some of the blessing is ridiculous.

My god… This community will never grow up…

I stopped playing VT2 after like a thousand more hours of gameplay from the moment I had everything unlocked. And by unlocked I mean Red items. So full agree, if you have a good game people will play it regardless if they’ve completed one aspect of it.

Sure, make it so we need resources to craft and reroll said items but not make it so that having a perfect item is close to impossible to make. I have 20Mil gold and 450K plasteel in my pocket right now and I simply refuse to craft certain weapons that could be considerably better (such as 1 blessing or 1 refinement off). If they have the bare minimum I need and a 370-ish score they’ll do. Else you risk spending literally 10 MIL on a weapon and still not getting it. In fact I did do that in the past. Not to mention that time when I wanted an MG-XII T4 blessing and it took me just about 400 weapon upgrades to get it.

Maybe they will, maybe they wont. Maybe it will be the greatest crafting of all time. Maybe it will be even worse than what we currently have. Only time will tell.

For me crafting in dt is akin to dropping a lichbone in vermitide. It took me 800 hours to drop one. Whereas people on my host with 40 odd hours dropped one. That aspect really seriously wound me up. So by the time it actually dropped it was never used. Sure I could have spawned it in, but it did serve to highlight just how unfair their rng systems were and still are!

Edit: it was actually 840 hours.

took me 1000 hours to get a red longbow in VT2, it’s a terrible system

that it’s better than DT’s system (at least imo) is hilarious and tragic

They really need to make red dust a daily log in reward in VT2.

I have 828 hours total on VT2 and all classes fully decked out in red gear. You didn’t play a lot of games on legend I assume? From what I remember I got a red every 7-9 emperor drops. Which was basically an evening or two. It became especially easy once they introduced red dust. If you had enough of it (dismantling all the dupe trinkets, etc.) you could have a newly released weapon as a red god roll in a manner of minutes.

Don’t get me wrong, the system is still terrible and they should have taken the athanor as a basis for further crafting concepts, but your example does sound like a bit of an exaggeration.

I played pretty much exclusively legend/cata+ after finishing levelling. The drop rates were worse and red dust didn’t exist in the first year and a bit of the game’s lifetime.

I know what the drop rates were like. My estimate of 7-9 legend runs per red drop was for the time frame between release and Winds of Magic, which introduced cata. Red dust came just 6 months after with patch 1.2.1 in october 2018.

Most people I know and myself had all their characters geared with reds by that time, just by playing legend alone. Especially after the introduction of red dust. When chaos wastes came around 3 years later no one had any issues at all with reds. That’s where I probably spent the later 250-300 hours of my playtime

I guess my group and I were just supremely lucky.

eh I know other people who took over 500 hours to get all reds pre-red dust, some people (like myself) were just getting charm spam or other duplicates. Hell it took me over 500 to get even a single tier of no respite in DT so maybe I’m supremely unlucky.

regardless the rate of grind required to get fully geared out in either game is severely influenced by rng

True, they’re both dogsht. It’s such a shame they never expanded on the athanor concept.

I wonder if it was the tencent consulting influence that made them double down on the RNG. I should bother checking the date of their acquisition sometime and compare it to the early pre release interview where they talked about crafting systems.

Took me around 800h to red everything, still missing skins after 2500.

If only they would let us upgrade locked perks / blessings with diamantine, I wouldn’t care one bit about keeping em.

Not that I do anyhow at this point, but not everyone played 2k+ hours gathering more resources that can realistically be spent unless chasing THE godroll, which idgaf about. Breakpoints, outside of a few edge cases, matter little to nothing in this game.
