Divided and Underdeveloped - Fatshark's Failures at Multiplayer and Narrative

Unless you define lore strictly about the sequence of events, this is categorically false. But if that is your definition, feel free to ignore the rest of this first part.

You might be able to still get all of the sequence of events and the like internally, but I don’t consider that to be 100% of the lore.

Seeing how characters respond to events and their thoughts on them matter as well. They help further flesh out characters and that in turn helps with immersion and storytelling.

I would say this is even more important when the characters are nameless, like via the wyrmwood vox intercepts or the Gloriana blog with the guard providing overwatch and spying for Rannick.

It’s all the little bits that tie together and make the world feel more real. Not everyone already has a baseline of 40k knowledge.

Again this is fine, even if not my preferred vehicle for story, but the fact remains that they could easily still add all that external stuff while making it accessible in an interesting way in game.

They could have a broken down vox port in a remote corner of the Mourningstar that you could tap into and find all these lore bits and bobs. They could even go the extra mile if they wanted and add dataslate pickups in each level you have to plug into that vox on the mourningstar to unlock those tidbits. Maybe some new, more fun hacking game could get you more lore dumps or whatever.

Just feels like a huge missed opportunity to get people more interested in the game for reasons beyond gameplay/hamster wheel retention mechanics.

again, ALL THAT STUFF’S IN THE GAME SOMEWHERE. just because you’re not finding it doesn’t mean it’s there.

It quite literally isn’t. Where are you finding the vox intercepts and the blogs in-game?

Because the launcher doesn’t count. That by definition is not “in-game” as the game has not yet launched. Plus, they don’t stay on the launcher forever even if it did count.

I was more disappointed that after waiting a long time for more story we’re just dorking around with the jobber twins more. Well, one of them now more blessed by the lord of fart and decay than ever before. wowee zowzers.

Bring on the 3 or whatever the cultists are hinting at. I’m done with those lame-O’s especially if you aren’t going to resurrect the Fart God (Rodin being the far more dangerous one in game, Rinda’s just an aggro hog for one player to distract). The cult stepping up to the fore font would be a great opportunity for some more ENEMIES TO KILL.

Ultimately, if the overwhelmingly vast majority of your playerbase doesn’t know your story much beyond some names and the broad 1-30 promotion arc after almost 2 years, despite obvious significant investment in voice acting and video creation and whatnot, whatever you’re doing to convey that story isn’t terribly effective, simple as.

It’s either not begin delivered in an easily digestible manner or if you’re wanting players to go seek it out, that’s not being well incentivized (either through being an interesting engaging story, or through other means) or made easily accessible.

That goes along with a lot in this game, same thing applies to most of the mechanics and stats, which the game does basically squat all to cohesively inform players about.

Ahhhh yes
Opening the steam overlay and using the web browser to listen to the vox casts and read the narrative blog posts is still technically in the game right?

Jakal is shocked that people don’t want to pour 6 different puzzles into one pile the floor and try to piece them all together without looking at the box art.

What people don’t want to do the police crime investigation with the pictures, pins and string on the board to piece together the plot.

Your scholarly analysis is too good for us.

It is a shame to see the potential missed by Fatshark, which is there in the game files, slumbering, somewhat tapped into but not fully woken.

Darktide is good, but it’s still not their Magnum Opus.

There’s a suspiciously ornate cubbie with a servoskull/cogitator station that’s been in the Mourningstar since launch. I suspect that was suppose to be it’s use but FS never got around to it.

Trying to follow the lore through randomized missions, randomized small talk, a YouTube channel, forum posts, and mission briefings be like:

wait, there’s a story?

I’m actually being serious here. I have no idea what’s going on.

I’ve been here since the beta and even I don’t!

You REALLY notice this now. I dare you to find a lobby in Auric Maelstrom. I double dare you to find a playable lobby in the previous “default” gamemode for the people left playing.
