I will never understand why dirty camera effect exists at all. I like bloom in tide games, it makes them look really pretty, however the option comes paired with the dirty screen effect around the edges of the screen.
I wear glasses, they are a pain in the ass, I clean them all the time because I hate even the slightest smudges. I’m careful when I eat at my desk so nothing sprays on my monitor, I also regularly clean it so it doesn’t have spots.
And then some games, for no sensible reason whatsoever, decide to artificially put DIRT on the screen! I can understand all the other post-processing effects like lens flare, chromatic aberration, DoF, even motion blur, even though all of these reduce immersion since the game is trying to emulate as if I’m viewing the action through a camera.
But intentionally DIRTY screen? I’d much rather have just a clean window into the game world, like I’m viewing the world through my character’s eyes, and my eyes are not dirty.
I know this request sounds petty, but I’m just baffled how or why this post processing effect even came into existence, or why there’s an ever growing trend of trying to emulate viewing games through a bad camera recording.
So please Fatshark, Darktide has implemented so many good settings for the other effects, the customization is really great, but somehow bloom still makes the screen dirty. It’s not like dirt is needed to make the bloom apparent either, it looks great on its own.
