I legit never paid attention to this button on the escape menu, never looked at it until someone was having trouble switching characters yesterday.
The nice QoL change from 3.4 currently only works using the hotkey.

I noticed this too but I found hitting the hotkey H to work just fine.
Used to work with the skull too but not anymore.
