I fully agree. The banter in Vermintide is done with more passion than Darktide; each line of dialogue a showcase of exquisite writing punctuated by phenomenal voice acting. Furthermore, the way the story is presented through banter is impressive. Vermintide is a master class in non-intrusive story telling with a cast that manages to deliver it in a believable format, no game comes close to this. As a matter of fact, countless lines from the game have stuck with me for many years now because of how good they are.
While we’re on the subject I’d like to share some of those memorable pieces of dialogue:
When I played Darktide I had none of the excitement from listening to the banter. It’s all so dry, boring, and generic; like white noise to brain organ - which is to say, quite forgettable.
Look, L4D (released 2008) was great for its time but if you look at the game now and compare it to Darktide, its not even close. L4D was a masterpiece. Why do people think that? Because it was the first of its kind. I dont think the game ever crashed. The atmosphere was incredible and It was the released at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse obsession, it came out a full 2 years before shows like the walking dead(2010).
L4D had what 5 weapons? (pistol, shotgun, ar, pump shotgun, uzi) No one even complained or cared about the lack of weapons
Zero melee besides the push
No dodge or movement mechanic, No sprint
Zero leveling process, besides difficulty
No traits or weapon perks, or attachments, or damage numbers of any kind)
I dont recall L4D having any sort of score or soundtrack.
L4D did have great immersion. I felt like I was in a hospital climbing to the top with my buddies.
L4D had an amazing multiplayer, although they never really adapted it, it became what I would hop on to play.
L4D had an amazing cast Louis screaming “Pills here” was a meme before meme’s existed.
Bill and Francis and Zoey. I remember them all!
The highest difficulty was also fun since you could clutch and sparce enough where players respected teamwork and understood running ahead like a bozo wasn’t how the game is played.
We are in a different time and generation where standards are absurd… I think everyone needs to chill on the backlash and look at the potential this game clearly has.
I agree, people spent money on a product they feel is unfinished but still if this game is burning you out maybe take a break. What happened to just playing the game because its fun? Why does everyone need a trophy after each mission?
I know you didnt mention L4D @MetalGearWar . But finishing a mission in L4D you got zilch, nadda, nothing. All you got was you knowing you did it.
You’re just saying that to fit your narrative. Anything can be a masterpiece.
I think people are too quick to write off a game.
Darktide does any of that
I agree, V2 characters and the decision to move on and have make your own character is painful and my biggest let down from my own expectations
Its a different universe and some of the charm of V2 does take a while to sink in… I used to hate victor, every time he spoke sounds so whiney and annoying… now when he decides to say something, it has become some of my favorite moments during a mission.
Must you keep Jumping! Have some Decorum!
(everyone jumps more)
THIS ! In VT, even when you heal you get to hear some dialogue. “Sigmar, bless this ravaged body !” If you heal at almost full health, you get to hear some banter. In DT, nothing. From time to time, you get to something about hogging the ammo.
Frankly I spend more time on these forums than I should and I have never heard something as severe as “we should execute the devs”. And I’m also pretty sure you pulled that 1:10 number out of your ass.
“devs are clowns”, sure. “devs are greedy and under tencent’s thumb”, sure. “Hedge is an @sshole”, sure. But your point could be better made without randomly strawmanning people to call them toxic.
Funnily enough, there is actually a lot of this kind of dialogue in DT.
If you heal yourself when you are at high health and someone isn’t as high, you tend to get snarky comments from the others.
Also, a lot depends on which voices are acting. The female Loner has some of the most hilarious responses and interactions with the Zealots. My favourite being when you get a Zealot up, the Zealot says something along the lines of “Wipe that smirk of your face”.
Again, this just veeeery much sounds like a case of having several hundred hours of time spent listening to the dialogue in a game that has been out for nearly half a decade while the other one hasn’t seen enough play to listen to the dialogue.
There is also the disconnect between pre-made characters and player-made ones. The characters from VT 1 and 2 have gone through a long arc of character development which has obviously given the devs ample supply of lines to keep throwing back and forth, so once more there is a big difference to consider in this one. It is like claiming, going back to the Bloodborne vs Dark Souls comment, that Dark Souls is significantly deeper in lore because we have 3 games in that one vs 1 in Bloodborne.
The point is that a lot of the dialogue and banter that takes place in VT is in DT, but there is now more variety to it based on the personality. There is simply a case of misfortune in that there is definitely favoured picks among the playerbase, considering how few Loners I have come across compared to the Lex Autist. Another hilarious one is the Bully for the Ogryn.
There just simply aren’t many massive 2 minute conversations yet in DT that take place between sections like there are in VT since the characters hardly have things to discuss as they more or less just arrived there. This is the kind of stuff that definitely people need to be patient with, a bad story is one that drops everything on you at once, just as much as one that doesn’t give you anything.
There is no reason for calling names, especially if there ARE big issues with the game.
It is not just about the “perfect 2%”, after Vermintide 2 one could expect a working crafting system and a functional gameplay loop.
For now there are only two things: reach level 30 and wait for the RNG store.
Of course the gameplay is awesome and FS is trying to improve the situation(!), otherwise the game would not be reviewed that good on Steam.
(And yes, with that I mean the current “Mixed”)
I actually miss the leitmotifs the L4D games had for their specials. The little piano sting that played was unique for each special. Here we get a generic “ominous noise” and then a few seconds later the unique cue. Also the hound and horde cues are too similar.
It’s not a masterpiece at all, but it definitely isn’t the end of the world as others imply here, either.
It’s a solid 8/10 game, exactly what I expected for 40 bucks from a mid-sized AA dev studio.
Good effort. Now they need to fix the issues and shovel some more content into the oven.
Must be a successor chapter of the Second sons. Their primarch, despite loudly proclaiming his allegiance to the heretics, was largely ignored by both sides. Nobody liked Diarrheus…
I am just glad we have a functioning game that you can play without constant desync like VT2 was on launch, a thing a looooot of people seem to forget.
Fatshark is notorious for completely botched timetables and overtly optimistic promises, but ultimately tend to come around once they actually have the game out. In other words, I am patient and for the price I paid, I got plenty of fun for it.
It’s like saying that this Steak with creamy pepper souce, mashed potates and 3x course salads with good dry wine is masterpiece… except what you got is only mashed potates and couple of tasty tomatoes with glass of lemonde. For same price.
Was it tasty? Well, yeah? But that aint what you expected from that restaurant at that price. Yet you still call it masterpiece ignoring all the missing parts of the dish.
Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok are masterpieces
Undertale is a masterpiece
See what those games have in common?
They were released as complete products without any predatory designs.
They all respect the time and money the player “pays” for them.
Heheh, yeah calling it a masterpiece is an exaggeration.
Maybe let us not point out this one word in OP’s post all the time and accept they simply really enjoy the gameplay and atmosphere of 40K emanating from this title.
We all know it is unfinished and lacking in many aspects, we can only hope FS will remedy that sooner rather than later.
Hi. I love the game, but its far from masterpiece.
I could overlook my issues with it, like mission selection board (which is main reason why my activity in this game rapidly decreased in last few days [190h on record]), rng grind (as i intended to spend thousands of hours, like i did in v2) missing crafting options at shrine of omnisiah (of which only one is comming 2 weeks after a "full game release), huge weapon imbalances (looking at you powersword and thunderhammer), but fact, that i am still getting huge fps drops (ranging from 49 to 87 [occasionally 110 +]) on my rtx 3070 ti 12 gb, on high details with ray tracing off, is a huge dissapointment and a game breaker for me. Now im still playing 2 - 3 missions a day, because yeah, gameplay is very fun, but everything around it is sheet in its current state, and it pains me even more, as i love 40k and vermintide.
I also treat most of dt ranting from vt players with reserve, most of them expected wh 40k vermintide 3, and i can understand that. Im glad this one plays differently. But most of their concerns are valid and on point.
At this moment i also enjoy playing it only with my private group, but only can endure as much for only as long as such.
History repeats itself unfortunately. V2 was badly optimized upon release too. And it took them months (if not years) to make it better. Time will tell, i dont mind waiting another year, but i dont think everyone is as patient as i am.
Vermintide 2 was meant to be a 100 hour game, I put thousands of hours into, Darktide was meant to be a 100 hour game that lost its appeal pretty much exactly at 100 hours.
