Solved! If you have a Q1000k fiber terminal, check for packet loss due to a recent firmware update! --Help resolving network related gameplay disruptions

Issue Type (Required):

Latency

Issue Description (Required):

Follow up on a previous post: starting around July 23rd I’ve been having debilitating network issues in game. Never experienced anything like this on my system (which hasn’t changed) in my 2000 hours of playtime. Did not make any changes to my PC the day the issues began, no driver updates, no changes to Windows 11 or Steam. Since then, I have had these issues in every single match. Region: US West

Attempted fixes since issues began:

  1. Followed any applicable suggestions in the following guide: https://support.fatshark.se/hc/en-us/articles/15604389552157-How-to-Resolve-Connectivity-Errors-Latency-Issues-in-Darktide-Backend-Error-Error-Code-2001-2014-3013-More

  2. Deleted Darktide after disabling steam cloud saves, and removed all residual files, including AppData files, before reinstalling

  3. Updated any relevant software: Nvidia GPU, LAN, VGA, Chipset drivers are all updated, latest windows 11 updates installed, latest steam version installed

  4. Following LLM advice which may be useless, ran a ping to 1.1.1.1 to check for packet loss on my network. Zero packet loss over 2 hours of gameplay. But again, AI advice, I’m ignorant and this may not be relevant

  5. 1 minute gameplay snippet highlighting the issue, recorded today. The problems seen are indicative of all my gameplay since July 23rd, check description for timestamps: https://youtu.be/v9TWDyi6KZA
Crappy Game-bar capture software and Youtube compression makes the framerate worse, but you can see the steam FPS counter in the top left. Included console log is from this match.

Sorry to hear this @KnotForSail

I’ve been unable to get the YouTube video to play, but from the timestamp descriptions the jittery/teleporting enemies could either be latency-related, or perhaps CPU stress? As Darktide is CPU intensive. You mentioned FPS dropping - so this could lean more towards a performance issue over a network issue. (without seeing your video and if you encounter any specific network errors though, this is speculation on my part). We also haven’t made any recent networking changes on our side either.

Perhaps our performance improvement suggestions could be helpful to try:
https://support.fatshark.se/hc/en-us/articles/7709662432413--PC-How-to-Improve-Your-Performance-in-Darktide

You appear to have already exhausted our connectivity solutions, so admittedly I’m unsure of what else to suggest to try on this side of things.

Thanks for the help. Apropos the video, is it working now? I’m able to view it on a different device (my phone), via this link, both on wifi and on cellular, and not logged in to my youtube account. If not I can try hosting it somewhere else.

As for the framerate, without the video my description was misleading. The steam overlay framerate in the video is rock solid, never dropping below 85 FPS. Temperatures and load on my CPU are fine, never had any hardware performance issues with Darktide on this rig in my 2000 hours.

This is quite a small reddit discussion describing my exact issue, and beginning at the same time. Only a handful of replies, but all similar stories. Long-term players that haven’t had any issues, suddenly having severe network instability. Reddit - Please wait for verification

(this link is stuck on “please wait for verification” on my end, but you can just right-click, copy link, and it seems to work fine)

Seems like there might have been a change that is affecting a very small number of players or systems?

This fellow from that reddit thread started seeing issues exactly the same day as me (July 23):

“Just my two cents. Over 500 hours in the game, same internet I’ve been running for a while, no mods installed, verified game files, and I just started getting what seems like micro stutters, slight packet loss, slight rubber banding. It’s like my ping is around 100-120. Just enough to desync things. Made sure I was on the closest servers too. Other online games my ping is normal. Less than 40ms and stable. This started yesterday I believe.”

Yep video worked when I next checked, thanks!

Hm, there haven’t been any recent network changes on our side - it’s the summer vacation period, so nothing has happened in the past few weeks. As far as I know, the hotfixes before this period also did not include any networking changes.

It’s possible that there may have been some temporary server hiccups, or perhaps a coincidence with some network/ISP-related issues occurring for some players. Notably, in that thread the OP commented that the issue resolved on its own and was fine for them again - which would match up with this, at least in their case.

How is gameplay for you currently? Are you still experiencing any issues?

Thanks for checking. As of today I’ve finally tracked down the problem after two weeks of losing my mind. The problem was due to an firmware update to my fiber ONT and how it interacts with a specific subset of LAN chipsets  (ugh)
It caused some minor packet loss, that was only noticeable on a home network to someone playing a lot of Darktide! In fact, I could only notice the problem while playing Darktide because enemy hitboxes and movement are usually so tight. Other multiplayer games seemed “fine” because there wasn’t enough happening to make 3% packet loss noticeable!

Oh wow, great catch! and I appreciate you sharing the solution you found
