Rending sometimes seems to deal less damage if you increase the amount

Issue Type (Required):

Player Mechanics

Issue Description (Required):

Increasing Rending sometimes causes you to deal less damage with veteran. Other classes?

Steps to Reproduce (Required):

This may be a damage REPORTING error in the as opposed to actual gameplay error.

It’s also possible that this is the case where the damage calculation does not immediately respect a change in player spec.

Errors seem come in when you are testing/speccing back and forth to test efficacy of different rending amounts.

For veteran, Spec down to Rending strikes (+10% rending)

Deal damage to enemy bodyshot and record that damage.

Bodyshot is important, because to get more rending, you need to spec to “Marksman’s Focus” and then “Chink in their Armor” (+15% rending)

Marksman’s focus will make weakspot hits introduce noise that makes the data harder to interpret.

Spec down to “Chink in their Armor” and get 10 or more stacks of Marksman’s Focus, activating +15% rending.

This should give you a total of 25% rending. 10% from “Rending Strikes” and 15% from “Chink in their Armor.”

Bodyshot same armor type and record, then compare. I recommend carapace, since it seems to show rending differences the best.

Note: Sometimes it appears to work properly and you get can some good numbers, other times it seems to deal less damage when you have 25% rending. My understanding of rending leads me to believe it should NEVER deal less damage if you have more rending. It may do the same amount/close to same amount with more rending, but never LESS damage.

i’m not sure this is that same issue, but it may be helpful to know that when testing these talents in the psykhanium they’re notoriously buggy. sometimes they turn themselves off or on after respeccing at the box randomly. it’s very hard to actually sanitize the tests properly with these talents in particular, for some reason

I suspect that may be part of the problem I am experiencing.

If you can’t get reliable data in the psykhanium, I question a significant amount of it’s usefulness.

Thank you!

Other talents that change damage seem to properly update almost immediately, like “Rending Strikes”, “Precision Strikes” and “Longshot”

Ah, it appears this is a known issue, and documented on Kuli’s Guides

“Note that there is wonky behavior when switching talents in the Psykhanium: After selecting Long Range Assassin, all current stacks of Focus have to expire first before the rending buff can apply properly at the 10 stacks threshold.”
