The leveling Matchmaking of this game really needs some work.
I started playing an Ogryn and around level 10 realized I was being paired with 1-2 other Ogryn every match. I though: “Man, Ogryn is more popular than I thought, maybe I should try something else because there will always be an Ogryn around”.
So I started a Veteran. And I think I made it to level 8 before I saw an Ogryn or Psyker in my group. Who cares right, it was fun and once I got the power sword and bolter I was leveling like nothing, winning every run on difficulty 3, and 90% of those without anyone needing rescuing. Yeah I was getting 1-3 Veteran teammates every match but I didn’t care.
Around level 20 I started getting Psykers in my group alot and watch them burn the entire screen and was like “Wow, I’ve got to try that”. So I roll a Psyker. Do you have any idea how hard it is to even beat a difficulty 3 with 2 low level Psykers and 2 bot veterans !?! Seriously. A good run it takes twice as long and is half as fun.
I knew that I was going to be catching the short end of the stick with gear because 90% of what is available to a Psyker is just better on other classes so it just fills your shop with garbage. I knew that I wouldn’t have all of my tools for like 20 hours, and not good tools for 40. But I didn’t realize how much of a knock on effect that had. It seems to me, that you get some back end rating and because all low level Psykers don’t have the tools to really compete, they all get relegated to playing together or with bots.
Look I get it, I don’t like playing with people who don’t pull their weight either, but having an Ogryn to hide behind sure helps me charge up my staff without getting hit. Or a Veteran to take out the ranged enemies so I can focus on the horde. Its a lot more fun the rare time that happens too. Yeah I might be better at Veteran and Ogryn than Psyker, but I’m not one difficulty level and 50% faster better. Ok, I don’t have 1/10th the wave clear of my power sword vet and it still takes about 5 times as long to take out an Elite/Special with brain burst over a bolter, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to play with a Veteran that can do that.
Seriously on my Veteran, I’ve played with dozens of people who easily beat me to the targets and are probably way ahead of me on the leaderboard. And I don’t think I’ve seen one of those people on my Psyker.
Something needs to be looked at here. I’m fine with leveling rewards and matchmaking but there should not be this much of a fun gap between the Psyker and the other classes. They need their tools earlier or they need different matchmaking.
