Free the Modifiers

Again, variety is the spice of life. So much wasted work.

It’s not wasted work if it gets people logging in regularly for events. It is entirely possible that pulling in “casuals” who see a new modifier once a month nets them more income than (further) enrapturing members of the 2k+ hour club.

custom games would fix this.

Imagine being able to make a scab melee + brutes + 20% cdr game or any combination of modifiers you want.

De-facto solo mode for me as everyone immediately leaves all my Blight Spreads + Rotten Armor/Dark Rituals missions.

While maybe it’s “fomo” doing the work, I think just having an event where the modifier is more common with the rewars tied in, and then adding it to normal rotation after would be a fine compromise.

I think it’s more that it’s something different than that it’s something you’ll miss out on.

And without the ability to create custom missions, I’m not convinced adding every new modifier to the rotation would be a good thing. Opinions seem to be pretty polarized for every event.

And looking at it from (what may be part of) FS’s perspective: if people respond well to whatever modifier is available during an event and it increases sales, it makes sense to keep that modifier in their back pocket for future events.

moebians and brutes were some of my favorite even after playing the events to death i feel like i messed out

It suddenly stinks of FOMO apologia in here.

Nothing of substance to add, eh? It’s ok, I know you need the hearts.

The points I made are reasonable and not in any way advocating for not adding more control over custom matches (which I think is the only way I’d want to see all of the modifiers added to the game all the time).

I guess it debatably makes sense from a business perspective, but it still isn’t very player friendly imo, which is more the point. Obviously people are going to want to play an event more if it’s only limited time, but it sucks when it’s pulled away if it was a fun event. Having them be Auric exclusive would probably have to be part of it.

Obviously lobby customization is the way to go, but considering how hard set FS seems to be against that happening, I don’t think adding more modifiers into Auric would be a bad thing.

Time-limited events are a part of tons of games, even ones where there’s no business case for it (like Nightreign’s time-limited Everdark bosses). I think temporarily adding variety to a game is totally fine.

I don’t see it as player unfriendly personally. Just some spice. The core experience is what I think needs to be continually improved/expanded, and I don’t see whacky modifiers really being a part of that. If I loaded up the game and my choices were 1 vanilla mission and then an assortment of modifiers I need to think about building around to enjoy, I’d find that annoying.

Which brings us back to custom matches. I hope we’ll see them, but I don’t think there’s a super-high chance of that happening, given my understanding of how FS has set up servers. That could change of course!

Just because it’s in other games doesn’t mean I like it there, other than obviously Holiday themed events. I don’t play Nightreign.

I think I get where you’re coming from. Personally I don’t have too big of a stake in this, as I pretty much exclusively play Havoc at this point. However before Havoc I was really starting to find Auric stale (outside of any difficutly complaints), and I would have love(d) to see Moebians, Sleeping Giants, Cranial, whatever the Totem one was, Rotten Armor and Inferno introduced to the mission board to keep things interesting between the different missions (I know a couple of these were introduced after Havoc). Additionally I don’t think most of these would need much loadout changing, at least compared to the other modifiers already on the board.

I would probably avoid the current modifier like the plague, but I already do that for Vent Purge, Lights Out, Waves of Dogs and Tox Gas anyways so 1 additional one I dislike wouldn’t be that bad.

Edit:

I agree, but the work has already been done on these events so I don’t see any reason to not add more variety to the mission board.

First off, thanks for engaging in actual, honest conversation. Sorely missing around these parts in favor of points-scoring and bad faith snark.

I didn’t bring up other games to justify not having all content available all the time, just to make the point that it’s not typically considered “fomo” to do so. Holiday events are a perfect example. I can’t play A Quiet Drink whenever I want, but I don’t take offense to that.

I think the main concern I’d have is quickplay becoming even more of a dice roll. I constantly see people complaining about grims, lights out, and every single new event modifier (without fail). If there was a higher chance to QP into a modifier, or even the same chance to QP into one out of the whole roster of modifiers, I think it could be problematic.

Which brings us back to custom matches again. There’s a real hunger in the long-time playerbase for more variety and more control. I just think it’d need to exist outside of the main flow of the game (the mission board), like Havoc does (which was also a solution aimed at long-time players).

i believe this is relevant

Ideally it would just be the current chance of modifiers, just it could roll a different set of modifiers. So instead of rolling Hunting Grounds for example, you could roll one of the other modifiers. I do concede that forcing people who might just like the classic Hi-Shock to play other modifiers would suck.

What I will say is that Maelstroms are long overdue an update. Even if they don’t want to use event modifiers there (although I think they should), having some of the less difficult Havoc modifiers show up would be nice (especially Moebians my beloved).

Imo Havoc isn’t a solution for “long time,” players, but moreso “try hard” players. I assume a fair majority of people, even those with lots of hours in the game, play on the mission board.

I assume Mortis Trials was made for this group of people, as an option to change up gameplay outside of Havoc but I don’t know how popular it is now.

100%

Lots of overlap there, naturally!

I think Mortis was made for everyone, while I don’t think the same could be said for Havoc.

I would like them to have a rotating set of modifiers for normal maps too, folding in past event modifiers. It is certainly wasted work after the event ends if the modifiers never come back relatively accessibly. Something like rotating the sets of modifiers for the normal mission board, it’s been Hi-Int, STG, Vent, Lights and Dogs for almost over two years.

By now I’d usually have some comments from here or reddit to add, asking for the current event modifier to become another addition to our wishlist rotation.
But, I guess this one didn’t quite hit the mark, cuz I’ve seen indifference at best so far.

But, by all means, if anyone sees praise for it and a request for it to be regular, drop it here.
I’m a blight spreads stan, so I will support and defend others’ right to bad taste.

I doubt there are any fans. There are aspects I like; the shotgunners dropping little bombs is neat. But waves of Poxbursters are frustrating because they’re so inconsistent to push and groups can be nearly impossible to destroy safely, meaning there is unavoidable damage.

And I think literally everyone hates a run ending from being thrown off a map, so who thought leaning into that with barrels throwing you further was a good idea?
