Famished Flames – Explosion damage treated as non-burning damage leading to negligible DPS gain on certain staves

Issue Type (Required):

Talents

Issue Description (Required):

I would like to request clarification whether the current interaction between Famished Flames and explosion damage is intended.

Famished Flames increases burning damage by 100% but reduces all non-burning damage by 15%.

Based on in-game testing, the explosion (impact) component of Fireball Staff and Conflagration Staff is treated as non-burning damage and therefore reduced by 15%. Only the burn DoT ticks receive the 100% increase.

Because a significant portion of these weapons’ total damage per attack comes from the explosion component, the 15% reduction largely offsets the burn increase, resulting in only minimal overall damage improvement compared to selecting no talent in this row.

Test Results (Damage per Attack):

Fireball Staff – Charged Heavy Attack

With Famished:
39 + 12.5 + (2 Γ— 12.5) = 75.5

Without Famished:
45.75 + 14.25 + (2 Γ— 6) = 72

Net increase: +3.5 total damage per attack

Conflagration Staff – Full Charge

Without Famished:
11.5 + 6 + 2 = 19.5

With Famished:
9.75 + 12.25 + 4 = 26

Observed Behavior:

Explosion damage is reduced by 15%.

Only burn DoT ticks are increased by 100%.

On Fireball Staff in particular, the total damage increase per attack is minimal.

This makes Famished Flames provide very little effective gain compared to not selecting a talent in this row.

Question:

Is it intended that explosion damage is categorized as non-burning damage and therefore reduced by Famished Flames?

If this is working as designed, the current implementation significantly limits the talent’s effectiveness on certain fire staves whose damage profile is primarily explosion-based.

I queried this internally and it’s intended behaviour.

From memory when I tested this way back Volcanic Force, being a straight up power increase, actually also increases the dot damage from fully charged staff attacks by 50%, making famished even further devalued on some of the staffs you might otherwise think famished would be effective for (fireball, conflag, flamestorm).
