Yup. People leave for good reason.

Might be better for ammo and medstation be fixed one tap per player at each stage since most incapable of sharing. Bit like Expeditions per stage.

Whole game starting to turn into PvP ammo hunt game.

The amount of times I leave medstation for person that needs, some guy comes along to top up 10%.

The sharing mechanics works, but how people behave means it doesn’t work…

Saw an Ogryn player once denied medstation. He quit the game I don’t blame him and to his credit he left quietly after staring at empty medstation. Saw a Zealot denied medstation by a greedy player, he reacted badly and decided to take a tour of the map and aggro the entire hell on earth back to the player like some form of retribution and made it clear it was intentional. So great two douchebags in one game. Never upset a Stealth Zealot lol.

Yup force someone to stay then adds complexity of AFK detection and sabotage.

I assume that, if you are leaving a game because other players are behaving very badly, you wouldn’t be doing so repeatedly multiple times in a row. I don’t think situations like the ones you’re describing would be relevant to what I proposed. Most of us probably leave a game now and then when we’re just having a bad time, and I don’t think that should ever be penalized or even incur a warning.

The players that should be targeted are those that jump from game to game and leave literally whenever they get downed, trapped, or pounced. There are a lot of people that play the game that way.

And maybe you guys have just had very different experiences than I have, but griefing hasn’t even been on my radar after years of playing Darktide. Do other people really encounter griefing that often that they’re worried about it?

I’m not a fan of the game mocking you for leaving, that seems like quite an emotional journey.

The games quick-play system could “remember you” and pair you with “like-minded” players. IE: if you quit while in a downed state frequently you will queue with people who also quit while in a downed state a lot. But even in expressing that idea it seems extreme. Sometimes it’s just not the right match and the next game will be different.

Great points. Rocket League will ban via timeout if you quit the match at all. I think the amount of penatly time goes up on abuse. For Havoc, where players are technically ranked, this makes sense to me.

I think you didn’t really read what I wrote there carefully enough. People didn’t start griefing before because there was no punishment for leaving, they didn’t really have to, they could just leave, it was much simpler. So no “hypothesis” was proven, you just made a strawman and heroically defeated it. When people are forced to stay as they afraid they’ll get punished (timeouted, or even blocked from playing games at their chosen difficulty) - that’s when problems will begin.

> What is with this tone? This is a discussion about how to improve a game we all enjoy, not an argument.

Because I don’t think what you (and other advocates of that stupidity) suggest is “improving the game” - in contrary, it’s harming it in one of the worst possible ways, bringing more toxicity into it potentially than anything else combined. You try to police this game as if it’s a highly-competitive, cyber-sport, PvP kind of game with some ranking system where people ought to play any match thrown at them, for the whole thing (the ranking, divisions etc) could work. It will never fly in highly-uncompetitive, “beer-n-pretzel” PvE kind of game absolute majority of its playerbase doesn’t really take seriously. The only result of your ideas brought into life will be more discord and aggression during the matches where people now often have to stay in against their will, while hating every moment of it.

Not to mention there is no issue to solve with such heavy-handed policing, in the first place. Somebody leaving a match IS NOT AN ISSUE, at all. Game has Join In Progress feature, and somebody else willing to play will join the game. If that feature doesn’t work like it should somehow - now that is the issue, and the only thing that must be changed.

> [@Spagett](#):
>
> I think you’re assuming that griefing will increase if there is some form of penalty for repeated leaving. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone intentionally griefing in this game before

Yes - because nobody needed it before, really. Griefing takes time and effort, and people are generally lazy and they start the game to have fun playing it. If they can’t have fun in some match - they press the button and leave, it’s simple. You needed to meet a real psychopath who will deliberately spend their time doing just that, instead of playing the game. But when you literally hold people hostages in your game which they don’t want to play, and you don’t allow them to leave - that’s a different case entirely. Now they have time, and they don’t want to play the game - guess what happens next? If you’ll manage to keep me, personally, in your game, against my will, while I would otherwise leave - I promise you griefing WILL happen, 100% guarantee of it 😉

Also, I have a quick question. All your premise is centered around “ragequits” as you call it - but how exactly do you plan to decide if somebody leaving is the one of those cases, them not being able to handle the difficulty? For example, 95% of me quitting the game last year was because I was joining a match in progress, and saw one of the game-breaking (imo) crutches on the team I never play with. Inferno Staff, krak grenades, Smite, Needle Pistol, Arc Rifle too now - if I see any of those in base game below Auric Maelstrom difficulty, it’s an instant leave for me (in case of Smite - it’s always instant leave, no exceptions). Usually I leave from the lobby already if I see one, but it’s not always possible, sometimes match starts before lobby is complete and a crutch user joins later. Sometimes it’s me who joins ongoing game, see the crutch - and has to leave immediately.

So, in the above mentioned case I don’t quit because “I can’t handle the difficulty” - I very much can, I can handle it much better than most DT players actually, as I only play on teams without crutches I listed, what is more challenging by definition. I leave it because I hate playing games with other players who use those builds, it’s miserable experience for me. But if game is changed the way you want, I’ll have to play those games, hating every minute of it, then? I can, again, ensure you that a lot of griefing will start to happen in such games where I’ll have to stay against my will, have no doubt here.

I don’t really feel this way about the game. I never proposed any kind of ranking or anything like that. I don’t think you need to see it as a highly competitive game in order to view excessive quitting as a problem for other players on Auric difficulty and above.

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> heavy-handed policing

Personally, I don’t feel like what I proposed is heavy-handed. It’s actually quite lenient and would only affect those that serially leave _a lot of games in a row_ after a warning (i.e. the worst offenders). Heavy handed would be a penalty for 1-2 quits, or a ban, or something like that.

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> Game has Join In Progress feature, and somebody else willing to play will join the game. If that feature doesn’t work like it should somehow - now that is the issue, and the only thing that must be changed.

I totally agree that improving back-fill would go a long way in making the issue feel like less of a problem. But so far, Fatshark hasn’t given any indication that this is something they intend to work on. I really hope they do.

>
> when you literally hold people hostages in your game which they don’t want to play, and you don’t allow them to leave - that’s a different case entirely. Now they have time, and they don’t want to play the game - guess what happens next?

I think this is just going to be a difference of opinion. I honestly don’t believe that this will happen to any significant degree, even if people felt like they needed to stay in a game they weren’t enjoying. I don’t think there’s a lot of people playing this game that would grief in any situation.

Also, I don’t think any policy I’ve suggested would really stop people from leaving a game in the moment if they really want to. If they want to leave, they’re going to leave, especially if they’re a casual player. My hope is that it would discourage them from repeatedly joining difficulties they’re not ready for, until they get to the point where they don’t need to leave games often.

Again, though, difference of opinion. And my opinion doesn’t matter any more than yours, especially since Fatshark isn’t listening to either of us!

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> If you’ll manage to keep me, personally, in your game, against my will, while I would otherwise leave - I promise you griefing WILL happen, 100% guarantee of it 😉

Maybe this is why griefing is more on your mind than it is on mine. I just don’t believe that many Darktide players would do this, especially on a regular basis. It’s more likely that they would just quit anyway, play easier difficulties, or stop playing the game. If you truly believe that such a change would cause you to regularly grief games, then you are the problem in that scenario.

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> how exactly do you plan to decide if somebody leaving is the one of those cases, them not being able to handle the difficulty?

At least with the theoretical changes I’ve proposed, the reason for repeated quitting would not matter. I just believe that this is why the vast majority of players serially quit games, although it may not be the reason you’re doing it. In my experience, almost all quitting occurs when someone gets downed. I think most people that play Auric randoms would corroborate this.

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> 95% of me quitting the game last year was because I was joining a match in progress, and saw one of the game-breaking (imo) crutches on the team I never play with.

I think you’re in a very small minority here - I don’t think that this is the reason why most people quit games. Does this cause you to serially quit a large number of games in a row? Would my proposal even be relevant to you? I think it would be nice if you could filter games for things like this, as you’re certainly not the first person to express frustration about inferno staff and smite, for example. But that’s kind of a separate issue about game balance and power creep - which I believe is the biggest problem this game has right now. Still, I don’t believe that there are many people doing what you’re doing here. Are a lot of people reading this quitting games immediately if they see another player using one of the above crutch/OP abilities?

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> I can, again, ensure you that a lot of griefing will start to happen in such games where I’ll have to stay against my will, have no doubt here.

To be completely frank, maybe my proposed changes would turn you into a serial griefer, but I don’t think it would many others. You’d be in a tiny minority there. I’d be willing to unleash an angry, griefing dunnothisguy upon the Darktide community if it helped reign in the rampant quitting in Auric that affects almost all of my pub games.

> [@dunnothisguy](#):
>
> Because I don’t think what you (and other advocates of that stupidity) suggest is “improving the game”

If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think Fatshark is particularly interested in my opinion, and I think it’s highly unlikely that anything like this will ever be implemented. We’ll just have to agree to disagree about whether or not it would cause more toxicity. I still think that the rampant quitting in Auric is an issue that negatively affects the experience of most people that play with randoms in Auric difficulty and is worthy of being addressed in some way by the devs.

Players might simply have disconnected or crashed. Penalizing them under these circumstances would cause serious dissatisfaction. Why should players be punished because of Fatshark’s poor optimization?

At least based on what I proposed, players that disconnect or crash theoretically wouldn’t be at risk for any warning or penalty. Firstly, because they have the opportunity to reconnect. Secondly, because I don’t think players should receive a penalty unless they _repeatedly leave a significant number of games in a row despite a warning and without reconnecting_. I really don’t think this would apply to situations where people periodically crash or disconnect, unless you are crashing or disconnecting from literally every game and don’t reconnect to any of them.

Fatshark’s servers are terrible. At least in Asia, we often joke that Fatshark’s servers are hosted in the Warp, constantly affected by Warp storms. Sometimes multiple players disconnect at the same time, causing the mission to fail immediately. Other times, the game crashes due to various mod-related issues. There are also cases where cross-region matchmaking occurs—like Asian players being matched into European servers, resulting in extremely high latency and constant disconnections. Even if you reconnect, you’ll drop out again shortly, and enemies will stand still or even float in place.

He makes a very valid point—especially when some content creators teach others to bind marking to left-click, or when there are auto-mark mods constantly spamming the “ding ding ding” sound. Some players also refuse to play with those using cheat mods (I’ve seen aimbot mods that automatically lock onto heads). And then there are those matches where you have three Arbites teammates who just keep charging forward without looking back, while you’re a Psyker forced to constantly chase after them, only to get beaten to death by the enemies they leave behind. Players have the right to refuse to play with others who make the experience unpleasant—and they shouldn’t be penalized for that.

Freedom doesn’t mean freedom from consequence. Of course you have the right to leave games, and that can never be taken away. No one is suggesting that the “Leave Game” button be removed. But it doesn’t mean that there can’t or shouldn’t be consequences for abusing that freedom - this is something that many other games already have. You could also argue that other players have the right to not have their games constantly damaged by the many people that leave any game the instant they get downed - I do believe it is possible to create a warning/penalty system that pretty much only targets people who do this. Darktide shouldn’t be a game that you can basically only play with friends or premade teams.

I think that most of us will leave a game from time to time because of things like this. But are you leaving _every_ game because of this? Do these things cause you to leave many games in a row? I don’t think anyone should be at risk for warning or penalty for doing this sometimes, and if any theoretical system was implemented to combat serial leavers, then situations like this shouldn’t trigger any response, because you simply wouldn’t be leaving enough games consecutively. Only the worst offenders should ever see a penalty, if there ever was such a system in place.

> [@BFV\_Robot](#):
>
> Fatshark’s servers are terrible.

Crashing and disconnecting are things I experience sometimes, but certainly not often enough that I’d be worried about the game labeling me a “serial leaver”. But maybe things are just worse elsewhere. If this is the case, then the devs would need to develop some method of distinguishing between people that leave games voluntarily and those that don’t. I believe this is doable as well. You could exclude people with very high latency, or people that have attempted to reconnect but were unsuccessful. You could track who actually pressed the “Leave Game” button. You could track who was in a downed state when the disconnect occurred. These are just some examples off the top of my head.

But we’re just discussing a hypothetical that won’t ever actually exist, because I don’t believe Fatshark will ever implement anything like this anyway. I wish they would, but I think they’d be too afraid to do it.

good thing to have that sort of time capsule, somewhere on CDs and later usb sticks i got quake 3 demos saved as well for future generations 😂
