As a top-line description, that’s broadly accurate, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near that clear-cut in actual gameplay, and it depends heavily on builds and weapons. For example, in an assassination mission, in my experience the best setup is for the zealot to run flamer and only use the flamer against the boss (100% ranged), whereas a vet with a power sword and (for example) an infantry autogun should focus on meleeing the boss and use ranged sparingly.
I just re-watched the end of that video to remember the context for this. So… ok, I’m obviously not trying to say we played ideally or anything. I just linked that vid to try and cheer up the downbeat folks in this thread (“look! you can still have fun with a regular STG!”), not as a showcase for how amazing we are at playing this game. (Which we’re not, just to be clear lol, we’re filthy casuals / old friends who use this game to keep in touch.) All that said, imo it’s absolutely appropriate for the zealots to break out the autopistols to take out specials and shooters. Arguably that’s the primary purpose of toting the autopistols to begin with, or at least, that’s the main way I’ve always used autopistol/laspistol/revolver – it’s a quickdraw weapon that you can hot swap to when you’re meleeing and a disabler appears, and when your ult is up you use it for pure ranged DPS because you can get off so many more hits vs using the ult on a single melee swipe. And the vet in this vid was running power sword, which is much better at horde clear than the zealot with a knife – and even better than the zealot with a heavy sword when the horde has some armored enemies mixed in.
As far as why we were low on ammo. If I recall correctly, we’d just fought a plague ogryn and a horde together, and the last section of the map had been very stingy with ammo? But I’m also not as ammo efficient as I could be when I run autopistol (it’s just so fun to blaze away!), so, that’s definitely an example of a way in which I’m not such an amazing player :o
Still not saying that you are bad, you are clearly good players and around 95% of the playerbase are incapable of anything that we see in the vid (basically winning damnation STG, while trio, while having fun with non meta/class strength maximizing builds). I am just saying, and that was my first point: normal STG is not that hard, so OP is right to be meh about it.
THIS is the reason why I don’t invite anyone to play darktide with me. THIS is the reason why I don’t play darktide much anymore. THIS is the reason why I will not be recommending this game to anyone.
Sure wish FS would let us access 5 hi shock all the time… it’s hard to put into words how much better it is than everything else. Why create such fun gameplay, and then just…not let players access it? Why? Why would you do this??
I’ve been wondering this too. I’ve heard people speak up in support of regular lo intensity (as a way to “get your feet wet” in a new difficulty), but what the heck is the point of lo intensity shock troops…? The whole point of shock troops is that it’s super intense, on-the-edge-of-your-seat madness – why would you want to play a lo-intensity version of that?
It’s utter nonsense. It serves no purpose, apart from polluting the already limited pool of missions available. Another proof that FS doesn’t have a clue what they are doing with their game. Those are examples of bad design and a true lack of hindsight from their part.
Honestly, I am done chasing hi-int STGs because they force you into a campy play style with a lot of ranged combat and door spamming.
I rather just play normal STG or vanilla hi-int with a fun (new) setup then go through the repetitive pacing of hi-int STG.
I mean, I still play it when it’s available, just for the variety, but I stopped caring about it.
Having only low-int missions for Damnation is just bad design, though.
Nothing forces players into that. But many players still do it, because they lack aggressiveness.
Which is probably the worst thing about playing 5HISTG.
Having a bunch of squadmates that do not move forwards and waste a lot of time.
