This is a mod-related question, but I need to ask about the issue mentioned in the title. Recently, a mod has emerged that allows players to set up their own local Darktide servers, enabling 8 players to join a single match simultaneously, or introducing items that don’t normally exist in the game. I’d like to know if this is permitted.
This kind of behavior goes beyond the usual use of mods. It appears that setting up private servers already carries legal risks.
i know modders got warned previously to not do things that cut into the companies bottom line and in my opinion this qualifies. so legitimately i think fatshark may act on this. they may also just let it slide because at this point it might not be worth the effort.
not trying to snitch or influence or anything, fatshark doesn’t read most of this shitt anyway unless you ping julia. i guess they might in the technical support forum though.
Modders making it possible to pick maps, modifiers and access more weapons?
Victor will probably lose his sht at the thought of his vision being turned upside down like this. Where’s the retention? The RNG? The grind? This is blasphemy!
You still need to buy the game. The only thing you get around is … cosmetics? But, you also aren’t using Fatshark server resources. At that point, a person who just buys the game and no cosmetics and doesn’t use the mod costs the company more by taking up slots on their servers.
Meanwhile, this mod may actually get some of my friends to buy Darktide who otherwise won’t because I know they don’t want (or have the time) to deal with the level/weapon/mats grinding you have to do to get to the interesting stuff. I’d love for them to just be able to select talents and craft weapons from the get go. Yes, there’s something to be said for the progression system teaching them how to play, but the grind goes way past that.
I see this as a great thing for people to play fun mods together and solo play missions and true duos without bots and such. It would be heartbreaking if fatshark took it down.
From my view, it doesn’t bypass DLCS, cosmetics, or buying the game. It also doesn’t cost Fatshark any additional money from running these servers, as they are locally hosted. You also gain no account progression or any rewards from playing.
So I do not see the harm in this existing, I see it as expanding the player base potentially with fun user-made mods you can play together.
thats not all of their income though. cosmetics fomo shop, “retention mechanics” and probably other business strategy when it comes to updating is all being circumvented here.
i love it but fatshark probably doesnt. i’m not surprised to hear they’re already discussing this one internally
to my understanding none of it runs through fatshark servers so it’d be trivial to make it happen with this mod, and has probably already been done. even if people dont publicize such mods/plugins for this mod, then fatshark is probably quaking in their boots at the possibility of it being shared privately
They have been okay with mods like for the drip and NPC look since forever as long as it doesn’t show for other players. The community has always been respectful of that.
That is not true, even without this mod, you could do that. The modders of this community have been incredibly respectful. Fatshark has always been very chill about this.
i’m personally aware of 3 modders who got multi month bans for making mods that clearly break tos, and those were just regular cheat mods. modders aren’t a monolith, the more competent ones for sure care more, but it’s not a given that if a mod makes it easier it won’t be abused by others.
even if modders really do hold back on the cosmetics front, there is still a business reason fatshark has been building the game the way it is with the random modifiers and limited time content and all that. this mod directly bypasses that too
