So not the most concrete feedback or anything. But after playing the game a lot and feeling like I’ve reached the end and conqured most things, I would love for there to be something to engage us continuously. Therefore I am proposing a meta-campaign or something similar.
What i mean by this, is that there is a community-driven campaign of some sort where we can win or lose based on for instance, how many missions we complete successfully and how many we fail. losing the meta-campaign could lead to, for instance, a wave of very difficult modifiers, or loss of access to certain areas of the hive city. I bet that as game devs, you would be able to figure out something a lot better than me, but I am thinking like the HELLDIVERS meta-campaign where you are constantly fighting aliens, if they reach the players coreworld, the players lose, if the players exterminate all aliens capital planets, the players win.
I guess you already have your hands full bringing as much as possible online (still waiting for flash-missions), but I hope this can be something to consider.
Some feeling of accomplishment/meaning for the missions would be very welcome indeed.
Recently having given VT2 a try I really like their mission structure there - campaigns and chapters where you strive for a certain end goal and have a feeling of continuity.
Properly to late for DT but the framework story could be driven forward a little. After all every player left is part of grendyls trudted retinue by now.
Mission environments, snowly, grass, caverns, giant tree, hills, open landscape. Very varied
Mission mechanics, hitting switches, escort, grabbing barrels. Love the little mini games to progress as team.
Fun and interesting mission end bosses in their movement and attacks.
Definitely more panic feeling escape at the end of missions.
Visual feast. The skittergate as you go in, the lighting of environments, walking through old mansions, dark caves, winding staircases, villages, sewers, great use of colour palette.
Took 2 years to get there, but does not mean every next game should also take 2 years. It has been 7 months and in terms of maps, it’s just 2 more maps with reused graphical assets so look the same time. In VT2 you could really tell what mission you were on from environments.
Darktide does have superior melee and ranged combat and better audio and visual cues for incoming attacks, just mission mechanics, design and colour palette feels bland.
Having a Helldivers style meta-progression would go a long way in grounding the random but identical missions in a way you feel like you’re contributing to something regardless if you actually are.
I think as a loose concept, you’re definitely onto something here. Reminds me of the meta-campaign in games like For Honor or Planetside 2 (obviously not the pvp aspects), where the battlefronts moved depending on which side is winning. Could perhaps have Dregs and Scabs as seperate forces that have to be driven back.
The only thing I remember with Helldivers, and it was a long while since i played, was that it was very difficult to win the war agains certain factions, but the concept was really cool!
