A step back in too many ways

While raw gameplay is fun, the backbone systems of the game are a step back compared to VT2 in too many ways.

  • The entire loot system is directly inferior to what the predecessor boasted; you would literally be better off - far FAR better off - reskinning VT2 lootboxes and forge into futuristic textures without changing anything in design.
  • Instead of 15 classes there are 4, and without a shred of justification in their mechanical depth.
  • There are no private lobbies.
  • You can’t order a bot to do anything, or choose their gear, or choose their talents.
  • Cash shop went from a fairly respectable “x$ for x item” to “x$ for arbitrary amount of monopoly money” freemium trash. That alone means I’ll never spend anything in it just on principle.
  • Launching the game went from one loading screen leading directly into the interactive lobby to several prompts separated by several waits… and then another loading screen if I want to test my loadout, and several more loading screens if I want to swap the character.
  • Every character has entirely separate gear progression - people complained that VT2 leveling is a bad and unnecessary grind so you made it worse?!
  • A coherent storyline is gone in favour of a “there are heretics everywhere and everything is going wrong at all times, so random missions appear and disappear” approach.
  • The scoreboard is gone.

Why? :frowning:

Here’s your story:

"Ugh, I hate you, but maybe you’ll be useful and we can kiss behind the gym after school or something :point_right: :point_left: :flushed:

Also, someone’s a heretic and doing bad things, but you don’t do anything about it"

VT loot boxes themselves sucked for loot variety and only worked because you could breakdown the myriad of random crap you didn’t want and use the materials received from trashing them to build or try and refine other weapons. For loot boxes to be better for Darktide they would need the same breakdown, crafting and upgrade system. With Darktide you can at least pick which loot you want every hour, most of which will be trash you don’t want and sometimes good stuff you do. Refining items is another system entirely that hasn’t been fully released, although there are some definite concerns on what we’ve seen so far from it.

Yes. As I said, loot SYSTEM, not lootboxes. Crafting is an integral part of the loot system, not a separate concept to be considered in isolation. Sure, VT2 had its issues, but the solution to “my finger hurts” is not “put the arm in a mincing machine and sculpt a new one out of the patty”.

I get why they don’t want to do crafting in Darktide for the setting, and not sure that will ever be a thing, but who knows. Maybe they’ll come up with an excuse to make it work. Instead of “crafting” it could be backchannel item “requisitions” from the black market. That way you can request the exact weapon you want from a trader instead of having to rely on recovered/refurbished ancient wargear.

the solution even without changing their current system is easy but even that the community managers and devs don’t want for us players, says all about their approach.

easy fix:
shop can stay at it is, but on lvl 30 it only sells blues.
base stats of the weapons are like vt2 so the shop only increases the weapons base stats until it hit the cap not the uninspired bad design decision we have now.

the weekly currency is for the 24h shop which will always sell max base stats items with max lvl blessings/properities on lvl 30.

both shops have 3 different categorys:
melee, range, curios (like the inventory screen).

the normal shop sells all weapon types always one from each.

the special shop sells one of each class specific weapon, beside a random amount of other weapons the class can use.

this came already up in the closed beta  we all know what we got in the end.

Fatsharks and Community Manager/Devs Solution: increase of shop rotation time.

Apart from visuals, Darktide is a major downgrade from V2.
You’d have assumed Fatshark took what they learned and made sure Darktide improved on those but it seems that actual improvement wasn’t a priority.
