A few more suggestions to improve expeditions mode

Just like the title states, just a few ideas to further enhance the latest game mode that everyone is griping about right now.

First suggestion? More unique modifiers. Sandstorm and lightning storm are the two I got (not to be confused with the sand vortexes modifier).

Sandstorm modifier would essentially be the vent purge from standard mode but set up for expeditions. Bad news? It would even harder to see through than vent purge AND would increase background noise a bit, requiring you to pay attention for audio cues. The good news? It would act very similar to Vets smoke grenade and force most enemies to close to a certain distance before they can try to shoot you (beware those snipers), also you can walk right past patrols without them noticing you.

As for Lightning storm, basically it would be bolts of lightning randomly raining down out on any exposed part of the map. You get hit, you stunned hard and damaged if not outright downed. Any upsides? One, thanks to Hadron’s efforts, she has rigged a device that will predict where a lightning strike is about to hit, so that you can try to avoid it. And two, lightning bolts do not discriminate between friend or foe, so if an enemy just happens to lured right into a lightning strike zone, well…

Second suggestion for Expeditions: lore content. We know for a fact that all these tech remnants are a build up for the next class to be revealed, but it would also be fun if we got hidden pieces of Atoma’s history as we gather them up. After all, Hestia keeps going on about how Baross is a false hero, but we don’t get specific details. Could also add special relics for us to find that might be of interest to various members of the Mourningstar, such as an ancient lost astartes helmet for example, as well as other various trinkets.

Final suggestion I have to improve expeditions (for now) are dynamic events. Right now, all we really do is wander about from zone to zone collecting scraps and what not, but what if we added a 40% chance of some random temporary event occurring? It would not stay for very long, so it would be up to you to decide whether or not it would be worth taking the extra time to pursue it. What would these events be? Could be some arch-heretic crossing zone, could be one of the deadsiders needing a quick rescue. They would be risky, but rewarding.

I think a big pain point is the open map and the emphasis on team coordination coupled with the lackluster tools and systems around team coordination.

Some ideas:

  • bigger and better player markers or even notifications that someone marked something
  • being able to “quick-vote” on next destination or put more emphasis on a destination marked by multiple players
  • adding a preparation phase to both Valkyrie and Sanctuary where players can see the map and plan a sequenced route of POIs, even better if this comes with a subsystem to create two man squads to split the objectives

i keep thinking they will add nurgle flies becuse few weeks ago someone was doing stuff at psykaium (i probably misspelled the name) and found nurgle flies in there basically same day expeditions released i think that’d be pretty fun and unique modifier, im also convinced the grid points penance thats not progressing is tied to new modifiers which means that they’ll be added fairly soon becuse penance can’t be progressed otherwise.

I ain’t too familiar with the bones of what extraction game modes need but the lack of any prominent objective to do feels like a misstep. And some of the objectives are really linger-y with timers nearing a minute even with the entire team, while some caches are cleared in seconds. Or the private caches you don’t even have to stand near and often don’t need to decode. I’d rather see objectives that feel more like the warband activities, scrounging the desert for pick ups doesn’t feel like it. Especially with the nothing voice overs. The loose cannon vet puts this thing’s story impact best when asked if they’re gonna find anything valuable in the wastes: ‘not a sausage nor a bean’.

However join in progress and quick play needs some serious work. Most zones are have only 2 salvage zones, so joining in a sanctuary with 0 cash to spend, no grenades and a heavily damaged character is just whack. Make every player have the same salvage on join in, if you take over for a bot come in with full health, and fix QP because for some reason I’ll often do a section solo and then have people join in the sanctuary making it take freaking forever because I have to wait for them to load in. Where are these people normally? It almost feels like QP is open only when you’re in a sanctuary or something.

As for items, most are pretty cool but the air strike and artillery are really mid at the moment. Fire barrel is actually underrated but kind of annoying to stick it somewhere that matters (it burns for a minute). Or maybe I’m inflating the value of those because you can basically take 3 items solo with them, lots of solo play. Could also scale the rewards to difficulty, at least make all the pick ups on auric 25 remnants? And killing giant conga lines of enemies (when patrol seeds get large enough) should give piles of remnants too, don’t discourage me from having a good time.
